Product Description

From the Publisher

The views expressed in all Rough Guides are based on the experience of the authors. Each guide is written after carrying out in-depth research.

Rough Guides have always appreciated the views of our readers and we encourage people to send us their feedback. Each guide book is subject to review and the readers' comments & updates are taken into account during the review.

The quotes from The Rough Guide to England that have appeared in the press have been very selectively taken from the book, which is in fact extremely enthusiastic about England. We don't think our readers would thank us if we said that everywhere was equally good, or if we didn't try to give more than a superficial overview of the country. Please do take a look at the book, rather than just the newspaper articles and I hope you'll see what I mean.

Best wishes,

Martin Dunford.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fair and useful 30 Sep 2008
Having used this book in practice, I've always found its comments on the locations it covers quite fair and its facts reasonably accurate. Obviously, a book like this can never be as current as the Net, so when looking for somewhere to eat you're best bet is to use your own initiative when you get there rather than sticking slavishly to every word of the text. Even so, I've always found it very useful. My only criticism is that there aren't enough street names on the maps it provides, and that can cause problems.

3.0 out of 5 stars Rough guide to England 29 Sep 2009

Useful guide but it packs in a lot of areas in one book. great for reading through as inspiration for places to visit. When you are away it probably will not cover all the local places that you might be visiting. As with all guides is very useful advice.

2.0 out of 5 stars Rough Guide to England 16 May 2009
Having found Rough Guides to be very informative when on holiday in foreign parts, I decided that the edition covering my own country would be useful when visiting areas that were new to me. I was disappointed to find that it was not what I was looking for. It is really aimed at visitors from abroad. It is not detailed enough to provide information on the small towns and villages that are a delight to visit, concentrating largely on the tourist hotspots. What I need is something more like the Michellin Green Guides that cover France so well. I'll keep looking!

We use this book when planning any trip in the UK. It then travels with us as light enough to slip into a day sack for reference. Happy with price and delivery times

4.0 out of 5 stars Rough Guide 11 Jun 2010
Very helpful book. Only problem was that it is a bit outdated with prices and a bit of other info.
Has useful info about places you didn't know you wanted to visit. Overall a good buy.

Pretty good and relatively thorough, especially considering the guide is covering a country steeped in history and a multitude of places to visit. It's a handy reference to have for both, residents and visitors of England.

1.0 out of 5 stars Trashy and dismissive guide. 11 May 2008
By Alex
Trendy guide trying to be clever and get some blatant free publicity by unjustifiably damning some beautiful parts of Britain. I suspect the dismissive authors haven't even been to some of these places - the guide reads almost as if the authors have just gone onto Wikipedia! Avoid at all costs.
