Product Description

Product Description

"The Rough Guide to England" is the definitive guide to this fascinating country. A 24-page, full-colour section introduces England's highlights with incisive reviews of all the best places to stay, eat, drink and party - plus new 'author's picks' to highlight the very best options. The guide includes informed accounts of all the top sights from The Eden Project to The Baltic Centre in Newcastle. There are practical tips on everything from cycling coast to coast, to hiking in the Yorkshire Dales. The guide also takes a detailed look at England's culture, politics, history and wildlife. This revised edition includes three brand-new, full-colour inserts: 'National Museums/Monuments', 'England's Coast' and 'Castles'. The guide comes complete with maps and plans for the every region.

From the Publisher

The views expressed in all Rough Guides are based on the experience of the authors. Each guide is written after carrying out in-depth research.

Rough Guides have always appreciated the views of our readers and we encourage people to send us their feedback. Each guide book is subject to review and the readers' comments & updates are taken into account during the review.

The quotes from The Rough Guide to England that have appeared in the press have been very selectively taken from the book, which is in fact extremely enthusiastic about England. We don't think our readers would thank us if we said that everywhere was equally good, or if we didn't try to give more than a superficial overview of the country. Please do take a look at the book, rather than just the newspaper articles and I hope you'll see what I mean.

Best wishes,

Martin Dunford.

5.0 out of 5 stars Detailed Guide to England, 24 Mar 2008
By Birdnut (Cambridgeshire, England) - See all my reviews
There is so much to see in our own country, and this guide really is excellent. Compared to it's rival-Lonely Planet's guide to England, it has got more detailed coverage, clearer maps, and design wise is better on the eye. I don't think there is currantly an up to date Footprint guide to England. On a recent trip to Fotheringhay in Northamptonshire, this guide was very acurate, and had a 'spot on' description of the church as seen for the first time. And the church is certainly the main feature of this village. Lonely Planet didn't mention the church at all! Another thing I like about this guide is that picture wise, it doesn't give too much away. I like the idea of arriving at a place and seeing the landmark 'for the first time'. This Rough Guide obviously does have a few photos, but keeps it to a minimum, so when you do visit a place, the initial impact is better. So if you are looking for a guide to this fantastic country that is very detailed, up to date (a new version is out in May 2008), and authorative, plus has a really good design and is very affordable, there really is no other choice. Every home should have one!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent for planning holidays, 9 Aug 2007
This is a book which when I'd bought it I thought - why didn't I get a copy earlier ? If you holiday regularly in England, it's worth buying, to a) decide where to go and b) plan what to do before you go. Plenty detail, well written and comprehensive.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fair and useful, 30 Sep 2008
Having used this book in practice, I've always found its comments on the locations it covers quite fair and its facts reasonably accurate. Obviously, a book like this can never be as current as the Net, so when looking for somewhere to eat you're best bet is to use your own initiative when you get there rather than sticking slavishly to every word of the text. Even so, I've always found it very useful. My only criticism is that there aren't enough street names on the maps it provides, and that can cause problems.
