Every hour spent pouring over this guide before you go, is worth half a day when you are there! We found brilliant cafes, wonderful tapas bars, and the best bottle of sherry in Madrid all on the first day, not to mention the best fried lambs intestines in the world, but that is definately another story. Use the Metro (the map is in the book) and get yourself about. The guide told us when the museums were free and when to hit what streets for the best shops and bars. Easy pocket size guide, it paid for itself withing 48 hours.

The original style of the Rough Guide series was, as the name suggested, to prize content over appearance. The guides were pretty cheaply bound and printed in black and white on cheap paper without photographs, but they contained a wealth of detail. Who indeed needs photographs of what they are planning to see in person when a map will suffice?
Having lost my last Rough Guide to Madrid I picked up Rough Guide Directions Madrid quickly at the airport without investigating too closely. It turns out that the only useful thing about Rough Guide Directions Madrid is its pocket shape (and the fact that maps are more readable in colour). Glossy photos are in but content is largely out.
To cite an example, Kid's Madrid has shrunk to a mere six items and doesn't even mention Faunia, an outstanding nature attraction with simulated environments such as a rainforest. In fact it doesn't get a mention in the guide at all.
With all those glossy photos, it seems there's not much room left for information about Madrid.

I missed a proper rough guide of Madrid. This does not give tube stations indications on how to get to the different places. Also it is a couple of years old and all the info start to be wrong, including prices!

Even for the most superficial visitor to the city this book is of no use at all. Spend ten minutes in the internet and you will know more about Madrid, plus will have found a nice... Read more

Ok - but not great for restaurant reviews
This book was ok - but sometimes we found everything was listed with no recommendations for what to see if you have only a short period of time to see them in. Read more
