This guide book is very disappointing, it's more concerned with the history and cultural relevance of various attractions than with useful details. For many places it didn't list things like opening times or prices, instead just giving a rough overview of the attraction. It had no useful maps whatsoever - the very few maps it had were all at the back, most of them unlabeled and without street names and the vast majority weren't even of the city.
It gave no real details about transport links and didn't have a public transport map.

All the information contained in the book can be found far easier and cheaper on the internet and with much more detail. When we were actually in Budapest the book was completely useless as it had no quick reference elements to it. If we hadn't already written in the notes section of the book then we wouldn't have even taken it with us. If you want an actual guide book to the city then the AA guide book is vastly better. Overall this an incredibly poor guide and its relative bulkiness also makes it a hindrance to carry.

There is much to commend this guide, which has a lot of useful and practical information. But while the Rough Guide layout works for the country guides which I have used, it makes for an irritatingly inaccessible jumble of facts and figures for this particular city. When on a short stay in a foreign city, you want everything to be just "there", but general information is towards the back when you would hope for it at the front; there is no easily available map (detailed arbitrary zonal maps spread throughout the text have to be individually researched); there are very few (Tram/bus/overground) network layouts and there are very few pictures. If you buy just one guide, buy the Insight guide, which knocks this book into a cocked hat, and only get this once you have it.

Useful but ... 6 Mar 2012

The Rough Guides are strong on history, flavour of a place and recommendations. I always find that I agree with the authors about how a city feels to the visitor but I did find that this one had some defects. It is hard to get a sense of the geographical position of the various areas and since their names are given in Hungarian it is muddling and difficult to know which is the old and which the new parts. For this the little Eyewitness pocket guide is better but the Rough Guide does have much more detail and sense of atmosphere. There is a small phrase section but everyone I met spoke excellent English and didn't seem to mind being so addressed. But the guide excels at information about all aspects. Top travellers' tip: do visit the zoo with or without children. Some of the animal houses are Art Nouveau and the authorities have made the creatures as approachable as possible. You can feed hippos from quite near with zoo pellets and have your photo taken with a beautifully groomed camel. Although we had no children with us, we had great fun in the children's enclosure where the goats practically knocked me over for a handful of pellets!

Not bad, but no good if you are after nightlife
All the best clubs we found in Budapest were not in this guide. Although the guide is not bad, I don't think its up to the usual high quality of the Rough Guides.
