Some background... I love my hi-fi. I love its sound. I want to have an integrated, round-the-house solution that allows me to stream my whole collection in whichever room I like. I have this, sort of, but it's too complicated for my wife to use, and it's not really worth her while learning, because all she really wants to do is listen to the radio 90% of the time. And when my internet radio fails because the server has rebooted itself unexpectedly or the wi-fi router has gone down, she understandably gets annoyed.

So, the problem I was trying to solve here was to get a decent quality FM and DAB radio for her, that also allows us to connect an iPod via Bluetooth from time to time. After a fair bit of research (and a good price from Amazon), I plumped for this Roth radio.

Build quality is nice. Sturdily-built and good-looking. Some buttons are a little bit small, but you get used to them quickly.

It's remarkably easy to set up, with an aerial (that must point upwards, so you may have issues if you expect to put this under a kitchen cupboard - I get great DAB reception with it only half-extended, however), and it just automatically finds all the DAB stations available. It took all of about 2 minutes to set up the presets for DAB and FM that I wanted. Up and running, and listening to high quality radio reception in under 5 minutes. So far so splendid.

The bluetooth connection is really quick to pick up, and again, the iPod was playing sound through it in no time. A nice wee extra was the fact that I can leave an iPhone charging lead plugged into the USB socket at the back so that it's handy to plonk my iPhone or iPod on top of it for charging when required.

The sound is actually very good, given what the little radio is designed for.

It was smaller than I expected but the walnut case has a quality look and feel and the whole thing is well built and neat. It gives a nice tone without any interference even with the aerial only partly extended. I paid £69.95 so a fair price for a quality bit of kit with Blue tooth. My only misgivings is that there is no pre-set numbered buttons to instantly choose a pre-set station. So 1 memory button has to be pressed (and a dial turned then pressed) unless you always listen to one station which is remembered from the last use. The other surprise was that it is not portable. For those of you who want the radio for a bedroom you will be pleased to hear the backlight can be switched off too.

This is an excellent radio with all the advantages of both DAB and FM. It's small footprint belies a really good sound. The wooden casing sets it apart and gives it the look and feel of a quality product. I am delighted with it and can thoroughly recommend it.

Brilliant bit of kit. Excellent sound. USB charging a bonus. Just remember that if you are bluetoothing your music across say from a smart phone, you should set the phone's sound setting to Mono (as this is a single speaker) otherwise it'll sound rather awkward.
