Australia released, PAL/Region 0 DVD: LANGUAGES: English ( Dolby Digital 2.0 ), SPECIAL FEATURES: Interactive Menu, Scene Access, SYNOPSIS: Jesse Marcel (Kyle MacLachlan) is a retired Major, who returns to the Roswell air force base for a reunion of members of the famed 509th Bomb Wing of the 8th USAAF 30 years after the mysterious events that led many observers to believe that aliens had landed even though the authorities squashed such talk. Jesse is still intrigued by what he believes he saw and uses his visit to investigate what he still thinks was a UFO crash. At the time of the crash, Jesse and his commanding officer at the air base in Roswell, Col. Blanchard (John M. Jackson), believed the debris that was found outside of Roswell at the Mac Brazel ranch could have been an extraterrestrial space craft. Their discovery made headlines all over the world. But the next day Gen. Ramey (Matthew Falson) arrived from D.C and ordered both Col. Blanchard and Maj. Jesse Marcel to change their story. A good cast make it watchable but it's ultimately frustrating and pointless as it suggests little new and, inevetably, delivers nothing.

On a recent visit to the land of enchantment (New Mexico) we called in at the UFO museum in Roswell... well called in is a bit of a stretch.. drove a couple of hundred miles each way is perhaps more accurate. The museum was extremely interesting, focusing on the 1947 Roswell incident. Instead of a sensationalised account or fanciful tales we were treated to a timeline of events supported by signed and witnessed affidavits from key people involved. Since many of these were Personnel from the local B29 air base or local government officials this was very impressive.
The museum had a display linked to the film "Roswell" and gave the impression it was well made so we resolved to track it down when we got home. We were amazed to find that it was only available as a VHS tape - it never seems to have been released on DVD... and having now watched the film we are even more surprised- it is a very worthy effort.

I won't give the story away (even if most folk know the basics). Suffice to say it is told in a reflective, retrospective way. The main character is at a squadron reunion and we are shown the events that occurred several years before through his discussions with colleagues. Gradually the Official story of the debris being from a weather balloon is stripped away and what "really" happened emerges. Dont expect CGI scenes of UFO's and crashes or much in the way of aliens. Think of it more as a thriller.

Thoroughly enjoyable.

Please be aware that this item is not the feature film starring Kyle McLachlan and Martin Sheen as shown on the Amazon 'blurb'. It is the documentary style film with lots of eye witness 'talking heads' and the fake alien autopsy footage. The film is Ok as long as it is what you wanted to order. If you want the feature film look elsewhere to avoid doing what I did and ordering the wrong thing!
