The Barber of Seville was the first complete opera on record that I ever bought — or more correctly, my father bought for me — in about 1955. It was a recording on three HMV 33 rpm LP records each costing two guineas £2—2 —0 [£2.10] — a huge sum at the time. This was the recording with Victoria de los Angeles, Nicola Monti, Nicola Rossi-Lemeni and conducted by Tullio Serafin. It was a splendid performance — particularly the young Victoria de los Angeles — and it is still available today. I have bought several recordings since but I think this re-issues set of discs dating from 1950 is up with the best of them. The re-mastered sound is surprisingly good and Guiseppe Taddei and Luigi Infantino come together like the best gin and tonic. The role of the Count was one of the specialities of Luigi Infantino and Guiseppe Taddei is a splendid barber. Giulietta Simionato is a fine voiced Rosina. I have enjoyed this immensely and in spite of its age, I can thoroughly recommend it.
Guiseppe Taddei and Giulietta Simionato both died in 2010 — he at the age of 94 and she at 99, just one week before her 100th birthday. This set of discs is not a bad memorial.
