Product Description

Product Description

Volume 3 of the complete Rossini symphonic overtures continues the pattern of placing rarities such as the lively student work, Grand'overtura 'obbligata a contrabasso', and Matilde of Shabran, set in medieval Spain, alongside perennial hits such as The Italian Girl in Algiers and La Cenerentola (Cinderella), said to have been written in just three weeks. International Record Review described Volume 2 (8.570934) of this series as having 'excellent performances'. Christian Benda is descended from a long line of musicians. He is chief conductor and artistic director of the Prague Sinfonia Orchestra with which he has recorded numerous standard classical works, as well as the complete overtures of Schubert [Naxos 8.570328-29] and Rossini.

Review

'As it reaches Volume 3, the brilliant Naxos series of complete Rossini Overtures, is increasingly acclaimed and seems now unstoppable in its march towards being not only the finest collection of Rossini overtures available, but actually indispensable to those who love this exhilarating music...Absolutely sparkling.' --Sunday Herald, 13/10/2013

'I am wondering what else I can say about what is turning out to be one of the most enjoyable series Naxos has produced. Certainly this third disc is at least as good as its predecessors in terms of performance and recording. In terms of the interest and originality of its content it is probably the best so far.' --MusicWeb International

More Rossini done well! 30 Nov 2013

Volume 3 of this series is another winner in the Rossini Overture sweepstakes. The opening selection is the rarely heard overture to the 1822 version of Maometto Secondo... and the dramatic manner in which Benda bites into the opening bars sets the tone for the whole set as does the exciting manner in which he executes the crescendo theme that occurs in the main allegro section of the piece. As with the two previous discs in this series a number of familiar and unfamiliar pieces are included. The real rarity here is the Grand Overture composed by the fledgling student composer and it shows that Rossini indeed had a natural gift for melody and inventiveness even at a very early age. Even though this piece is not a theatrical curtain raiser one can still smell the theater... and the term "theatrical" best describes Benda's approach to all these scores.

Finally a word about the sound... I just love the sound of this recording and especially the lively manner in which the bass drum is reproduced. It will give your woofers quite the endurance test and especially in the Overture to L'Italiana in Algeri. Also, in the pieces where trombones are featured Benda gives them quite the workout and the microphones capture this perfectly.

In summation, this series continues right on target and leaves the rather staid complete set by Neville Marriner totally in the dust. Here's looking forward to the fourth and final volume!
Part of the Best Complete Series 15 Mar 2014
By J. R. Trtek - Published on Amazon.com
For a complete set of Rossini overtures, this series from Naxos is hard to beat. Well, at the moment, perhaps impossible. I do like other recordings of the most-often-played overtures -- Abbado's comes to mind -- but for completeness plus quality, this endeavor conducted by Christian Benda takes the prize. The playing is sharp, the sound is excellent, and there's a fine sense of buoyancy. Recommended.
