I followed other people's recommendations about the quality of this 3-cd set of Rossini's overtures.
Neville Marriner's Academy of St Martin in the fields consistently produces high quality recordings but this really is something extraordinary.

Do make youself a favour and get this CD set if you want to have an almost reference quality recording of Rossini's masterpieces.

This compilation is superb. I've listened to several versions of these pieces, but none compare.
The whole collection is beautiful. Guillaume Tell leaps out at you in its finale, just as it should.
Il barbiere di Siviglia is just perfect. It's melodic, precise and timed immaculately.
It's hard to quantify what really makes this collection so remarkable. Maybe it's the feel that the musicians obviously have for the compositions, perhaps it's the conductor or the superb recording quality ( probably all of the above )but whatever it is, it just works!
Give yourself a treat, buy with confidence. I don't think you will be disappointed.

This compilation of Rossini's overtures is excellent. It's very difficult to find them and in a good price! I like the orchestra "Academy St. Martin's in the field" a lot, it's the same that plays Rossini's Il Barbiere,an accurate version of the opera. In this 3cd compilation, you cand find all of the overtures of Rossini's operas, with an excellent performances. The sound is very good. An interesting price, too!

I was first introduced to Rossini's overtures when I heard the Thieving Magpie Overture. I was struck by the sheer majesty of the march at the beginning, and the excitement and vibrancy achieved by the crescendos and climaxes. Rossini was a true genius at his art, and this CD attests to that. They are numerous recordings of Rossini's overtures which only contain the most famous ones - this one has all of them, so that listening to them is not simply a matter of 'name that tune'. Strangely, the overtures are not put in chronological order, which is rather irritating at times, but the CD redeems itself with Rossini's genius, the masterful interpretations by the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields and the excellent sleeve notes. The earliest overtures or sinfonias extant resemble Mozart and the late 18th century, but not slavishly so, and in a way that exhibits Rossini's personal style at the same time. They are very pleasant short pieces to listen to, well constructed and tuneful. Gradually Rossini's style develops into his archetypal style, which includes the overtures 'The Barber of Seville', 'The Thieving Magpie', 'Cinderella' and 'Semiramide'. These exhibit Rossini's greatest assets - his ability to write tunes, his sense of humour (especially in 'Il Signor Bruschino', his sense of anticipation and satisfaction created by the crescendos and climaxes and his imaginative orchestration. At the end of an overture, one feels as if the opera itself is over before it has started. Gradually Rossini's style drifts from this golden age in order for him to fulfil his artistic needs as opposed to the listener's, a changing attitude which eventually bring music into its dire post-Schoenberg state today, much to my displeasure.Read more ›

It's always the most popular Rossini overtures that are recorded and it's fabulous to have the complete set. The usual suspects are there of course, but most of 2 of the 3 CDs contain lesser known overtures. There does seem to be one overture missing though; "La donna del lago"(The Lady Of The Lake)!
The recording quality is first class as are the interpretations by Sir Neville Marriner.
I'm now discovering some other early works of Rossini in the form of cantatas which are also available from Amazon UK.
