That's language-learning success.
That's Rosetta Stone.

No translation or memorization required.

The most effective way to learn a new language is to be surrounded by it. When you were an infant, your parents taught you this way, by intuitively associating words with images. That's the ultimate language lab, but most language-learning programs completely ignore this.

Think about all of the ways you've tried to learn a language: classes at school, tapes and cassettes, even software that uses your native language as a base for your next one. What do they all have in common? Translation and memorization.

Instead of taking a "direct flight" from your brain to your new language, translation and memorization connects you to your old language. You always have to "fly" from your brain, to your native tongue ... and then translate what you've memorized to communicate.

That might work for a few words, but what happens when you get to a sentence or phrase? When you have to change tenses? You're going to make a lot of "connecting flights." That's why those other methods are so frustrating ... and why they fail.

Enter Dynamic Immersion.
This method encourages you to think like a baby. You'll pair words with vivid, real-life images and make connections between things you know and the new language. Soon, you'll be thinking in a new language, stringing words together into phrases that you create.

Innovative technology.
Rosetta Stone places this Dynamic Immersion method at the core of a suite of software that works with you to develop your skills. The simple, intuitive interface helps to keep you engaged in the solution, while advanced speech recognition technology makes certain that you're speaking correctly and accurately. Best of all, Rosetta Stone never leaves you behind. You'll only move forward when you're ready, when you've become comfortable and confident.

Communicate and connect with the world: Level 1, 2 & 3 Set.
Rosetta Stone Level 1, 2 & 3 Set will take you on a journey from the basics to a whole new level of sophistication. 4.0 out of 5 stars A great language learning package, 9 Oct 2010

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Rosetta Stone Version 3: Spanish (Latin America) Level 1, 2 and 3 Set with Audio Companion (Mac/PC CD) (CD-ROM)
I've been using this version of Rosetta Stone to learn Latin American Spanish for approximately 2 months and I'm amazed at how much progress I've made so far. With a self-learning package such as this, you get out what you put in so if you're not willing to work relatively hard then you probably wouldn't get much use out of the software.

The software contains three levels, later versions of Rosetta Stone have five levels. There are five types of learning with Rosetta Stone: writing, reading, verbal, listening, and both listening and reading together. In this way, the software can teach you in your preferred method. I prefer to use the listening and reading together so that I can both hear how words are pronounced and know how they're spelt; the second time I do each lesson a while later I use the writing to see if I can hear and understand what the person is saying without reading it and then write it out with no spelling mistakes. I've used the verbal part too but find this very difficult. The software matches your intonation and rhythm of speech with the recorded person's voice, compares them and then rates you. In some lessons the person talks quite fast so it can be hard to get everything to match up and score highly, even though you'd probably be understood in real-life. With each slide in each lesson, there is a choice of four pictures which must be matched to the word or phrase that has just been said/written/read/heard.

One difficulty I've experienced with this is that with the verbal and written sections, you just type out what is said or repeat it and you never get a situation where you have to construct your own sentences to match a picture. As a result, I feel I'm good at writing, listening and reading Spanish but actually speaking it is lagging behind. I'm hoping to volunteer in a Mexican orphanage shortly so will get a chance to practise them (you get out what you put in!) but it's the one shortcoming to this programme that I've found.

A second difficulty I've found is that a lot of what is learnt in the first level isn't immediately useful. You don't learn how to introduce yourself until later in the software and as a result I know other people have grown tired of using it since they think they're not deriving any useful information from it. You just need to be patient...

At level 1 the software introduces you to the basics of the language, starting off with simple vocabulary, such as food, clothes, girl/boy etc, colours, and the future and present tenses and gerunds. The software teaches you these words in isolation and then adds them to sentences which aim to introduce you to new words. For example, you may learn the words ball and boy and then the next slide will have a picture of the ball over the boy to teach you the word for over. The sentences gradually get more and more complicated and your Spanish knowledge is built up in this way. I found it a good way to learn as there's quite a lot of repetition to consolidate learning. Some people on other sites have said that they grew bored with the repetition but I didn't find it that bad and it wasn't too much, just the right amount. Another common complaint is that the software doesn't teach you the full verb endings depending on whether the subject is I, you, he/she/it etc. I personally think that grammar books should be used in conjunction with the software so if a person sees an ending is different then they can look up why it's different. I've also been reading children's books in Spanish, which has helped, as well as more difficult books. Like I said, you get out what you put in and you have to be prepared to read around the subject...

Level 2 expands on your vocab and introduces the user to more verb tenses as well as longer sentences and Level 3 does the same, each time growing in difficulty. Apparently once a person has completed Level 3 then they will know enough to understand and be understood in almost every circumstance. I'm still at Level 1 so can't comment on the accuracy of that statement!

In short I recommend this software. The cost is prohibitive for many but I feel it's worth the money. You can work at your own pace but if you took Spanish lessons then you might be held back by other people and it would cost significantly more in the long-term to reach the necessary standards.
