That's language-learning success.
That's Rosetta Stone.

No translation or memorization required.

The most effective way to learn a new language is to be surrounded by it. When you were an infant, your parents taught you this way, by intuitively associating words with images. That's the ultimate language lab, but most language-learning programs completely ignore this.

Think about all of the ways you've tried to learn a language: classes at school, tapes and cassettes, even software that uses your native language as a base for your next one. What do they all have in common? Translation and memorization.

Instead of taking a "direct flight" from your brain to your new language, translation and memorization connects you to your old language. You always have to "fly" from your brain, to your native tongue ... and then translate what you've memorized to communicate.

That might work for a few words, but what happens when you get to a sentence or phrase? When you have to change tenses? You're going to make a lot of "connecting flights." That's why those other methods are so frustrating ... and why they fail.

Enter Dynamic Immersion.
This method encourages you to think like a baby. You'll pair words with vivid, real-life images and make connections between things you know and the new language. Soon, you'll be thinking in a new language, stringing words together into phrases that you create.

Innovative technology.
Rosetta Stone places this Dynamic Immersion method at the core of a suite of software that works with you to develop your skills. The simple, intuitive interface helps to keep you engaged in the solution, while advanced speech recognition technology makes certain that you're speaking correctly and accurately. Best of all, Rosetta Stone never leaves you behind. You'll only move forward when you're ready, when you've become comfortable and confident.

Discover the building blocks and begin your exploration: Levels 1 & 2.
You'll learn a foundation of fundamental vocabulary and language and gain the confidence to master basic conversational skills. You'll move forward and learn to give and get directions, involve yourself in basic social interactions, dine out, use transportation, tell time and more.

I bought this item six weeks before heading to Italy, hoping to get a decent grasp of the language beforehand. I didn't have the time/patience to go to an actual language class and thought that this could be a good solution. I speak French and also studied Latin to A Level at school, so hoped to pick up this Italian quite quickly.

The technique used by Rosetta Stone - the 'immersion method' was quite effective. What this means is that everything in the programme is in Italian. You don't see the English equivalent of a word or phrase; instead, you'll be shown pictures and have sounds played. So you'll see a man cooking in a kitchen and will either have to click on the appropriate phrase (lui cucina), use the headset to say what is going on (i.e. say 'lui cucina') or something similar. Never do English words appear. Whilst this has benefits, in that you don't fret about translating individual words and tend to memorise phrases as a whole, then substitute the appropriate words for it to make sense in other situations, it can seem quite unnatural and strange to people who have only ever learnt languages in the classroom. Also, you don't go through the technical side of things; i.e. look at verb tables and learn the various word endings like a parrot.

The reason I didn't give it five stars is down to a few gripes; one being that you have to use intuition and guesswork at times, because of this immersion technique. For example, if you see a picture of a woman on a bicycle, the lack of English (or even Italian) instructions means that you might end up saying the equivalent of 'she is riding' or 'she has a red bicycle', yet the programme actually wants something like 'yes, she is cycling' as the answer.

As someone who traditionally didn't get on with languages, when it came to learning Italian I needed a fresh approach to the language and found it right here in the fantastic Rosetta Stone series. The software (which runs flawlessly on my Windows 7 64-Bit Laptop) teaches you the language directly, bypassing the need for any translation meaning that you learn quickly by understanding rather than traditional courses that would have you learning lists of words. Grammar exercises don't feel difficult as you begin to trust your intuition to give you the right answer rather than going via your native language. In fact, the only time you'll see your native language in this software are on the lesson screens where the learning is broken down into easily manageable sections with reminders to re-take past reviews and the ability to re-cap where required.

The lessons themselves are split into several different types with each new topic or section being introduced by a core lesson and then reinforced through grammar, writing, pronunciation and vocabulary sections. The great thing about the software is that while your learning at no point does it feel like a chore nor, despite the constant feedback on both your written and spoken word, does it feel like a test. This is how languages should be learnt, direct association from foreign language to object, question or action rather than tedious lists and complicated rules. Learn this way from the start and trust me, stick with it and trust me, you won't regret it.
