This was a fascinating read of a life so different from those we lead today. An insight into colonial life. Once I started reading, I found I was caught up with the author, Amanda, and her life in Rhodesia, and how she managed to keep in touch with England. Her letters home obviously gave her a wonderful springboard from which to write this memoir. Loved the poems and the epilogue with Google earth bringing us right into the present. My husband (who does not read many books) also read the book, and found it so interesting!

Roses Under the Miombo Trees: An English Girl in Rhodesia
A beautifully written and very visual picture of the life and attitudes of a colonial family in the 1960's in Rhodesia, based on letters written home to England, and augmented with delightful poems, which give the narrative an extra dimension.

Format: Paperback
A beautifully written memoir which conjures up a clear picture of a society and political situation on the eve of change, written from a very personal perspective .Easy to read with some lovely details which paint a very absorbing picture of life as a young colonial wife with it's mixture of privilege and deprivations.I enjoyed the domestic details and sense of starting out on a big adventure but the author also manages to underline the inequalities inherent in the time and place without being heavy handed.
