I own a very cheap & dilapidated copy of this book. It is for me the most comprehensive cookery book. It is always the first book I reach for when thinking of an every day menu or for entertaining. The instructions are clear & concise. Each chapter has a good introduction about how to make or cook eg pastry, pulses, pasta.
Every recipe I have cooked has worked
In short I am a devoted fan

Completely useful 20 Oct 2008
I have had this book for 20 years. It's lack of spine and cover bear testimony to its frequent use. (I must treat myself to a new copy!!!) It has helped me train my husband to cook, and has proved a constant source of inspiration for every sort of meal and every sort of occasion. It'll even make you love nut loaf!

A Wonderful Book 14 Mar 2009
By V. J. Robinson - Published on Amazon.com
I have a fairly carefully-selected range of vegetarian and vegan cookbooks, but this one is my favorite. The recipes are fairly simple to follow, but they taste complicated and often look beautiful in their serving bowls. (Presentation counts!)

The best aspect of this book in my estimation, though, are the photos. There is page after page of lovely color photos of ingredients, including spices and herbs, various kinds of fruits and vegetables, and grains. The photos are works of art by themselves, but they are also very useful for choosing ingredients that you might not be familiar with when you're in the store, standing in front of a display.

In the end, though, it all boils down to the food. This is good cooking.
