Exquisite! 4 Feb 2008

I stumbled across Chris While quite by accident, and I'm very glad I did! This has become one of my favourite albums. Beautifully expressed and meaningful lyrics, lovely melodies and that wonderful voice. Chris While has warm, pure and expressive vocals, and is a very accomplished songwriter. She wrote all but 2 of the songs on this album, and finishes with a splendid cover of Joni Mitchell's Both Sides Now. The track listing is as follows:

Falling Ashes
You Didn't Think It Through, Did You?
Pennyweight Hill
Safe In Your Arms
Dark Blue Eyes
When I Watch You Sleep
Think I'll Let It Ride
The Promise
Walking In My Shoes
Both Sides Now

If you enjoy this, I heartily recommend you try the 2 albums of duets with her daughter Kellie.

This is a dull and lacklustre effort. It's seems for the most part like a self indulgent whinge. There's hardly a track here that I don't want to 'fast forward' on.

Don't get me wrong here - I LOVE Chris While's voice, She is absolutely one of the very best female folk artistes in the UK today. Her voice is rich & melodic. Her lyrics are usually thought provoking, inspiring or uplifting. But this album is tedious.

I recommend 'In the Big Room' or better yet, 'Look at me now' as great solo Chris While albums. Personally, I think she's at her best when she's working with Julie Mathews as 'While and Mathews'
