If you are familiar with Craig Armstrong's film work (Love Actually, Moulin Rouge, etc) you will know he's a bit good at this music-to-make-you-feel-emotion stuff.
So why does he want us to party like it's Berlin, 1976? Why is he hiding behind the Winona band name?
Who knows, maybe it's just his age, but he was/is obviously a big fan of Kraftwerk, Tangerine Dream and the like. That said, this is no embarrassing rehash or pastiche, it's a proper, modern album by a highly talented composer who just happens to be performing in the style of German electro pop/rock.
So, is it no more than an interesting part-time diversion for him and his fans?
Hard to say. I like his music and sought this out because I am genuinely interested to hear anything he has to offer. I knew it was going to be crafted to a very high standard and imbued with a haunting, addictive quality that runs through all his work. He's also very good a thumping bass line and a few tracks on here are no exception. It's a very enjoyable CD and repeat plays are frequent as are recommendations to friends.
I guess in the absence of an obvious revival of German eletro pop then we have to consider Winona to be a Craig Armstrong album in slight disguise (i.e. a good thing), an interesting side-dish, at least until he releases another Winona album. That would be a good thing too.
