Product Description

One of the glories of the medieval cathedrals was the rich display of colour and light in their great stained glass rose windows. Following the same patterns but using simple materials, this book shows how you can make decorative transparencies to hang in a window at home or in school. The author gives step-by-step instructions on how to build up a design out of flower and star shapes, or snowflake and crystal motifs. She describes how to make more complex and magnificent rosettes, reminiscent of the rose windows of old. In the second half of the book, the author shows how to create transparencies to illustrate fairy stories and folk tales.

unique tissue paper craft book 24 Nov 2000
By christinemm - The Thinking Mother - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
What is a rose window? It is a stained glass window on a grand scale, as used in Cathedrals. The author gives easy to understand directions for making tissue paper transparency decorations to hang in a window. The photos are lovely and show how beautiful tissue paper can look when light shines through it. The illustration on the cover is for what I consider to be the most difficult project in the book. There are many easier projects for the beginner to try first. Although the finished project looks complex, the projects are easy to make. Basically all that is needed is tissue paper, a handmade cardboard frame, scissors, pencil, and glue. Simple patterns are in the book and must be photocopied before use. These rose windows would make a lovely and unique gift, especially for adults. Twenty-five pages at the end are dedicated to instructions for large tissue paper scenes to hand in a window. The instructions for star money: a fairy tale scene and lantern-holding children are detailed, but once you understand the general instructions, you can make your own custom designs, such as celebrating holidays, festivals, or nature landscapes.

For those who love paper--and cutting/tearing it up 22 April 2010
By S. Elliott - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is not a book for paper collectors (guilty). You have to actually *use* paper to make these lovely creations. In the process, you will learn there is much more to tissue than shoving a few sheets into a gift bag.

Rose Windows is all about working with tissue paper and how the characteristics of tissue play into the color and intensity of making a Rose Window. There are about eight pages using the basic technique to make a project accompanied by color photos, templates and line drawings to assist in the explanation. Following that is a short project giving a variation of the basic technique. The remainder of this small-format book gives further variations of stars and rosettes, then making transparencies. The big finale is actually not a Rose Window at all, but a rather extensive project with photos, templates, and line drawings explaining how to make a complex scene using tissue paper. The key to the projects is that in order to get the real effect you need to have a light source behind it--like a window! Actually, maybe a person could start out small putting a design on a clear square candle holder.

I have not done much with tissue other than crumpling it up and spreading it out for a background on a greeting card. This is a nice exploration into discovering what tissue paper can really do. I can see a card in my future with a Rose Window in the front aperture using a clear transparency to protect it.

The one thing I wish I could have found (maybe I missed it) is a discussion of whether one type of tissue works better or looks prettier or blends colors better than another (i.e., Art Spectrum, fade-proof, run-of-the-mill dollar store stuff). Can I spend a little or should I spend a lot?

wonderful paper craft book 15 Dec 2009
By Yirmi Zehavy - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
A wonderful surprise awaited me at the opening of the book! I bought the book, after buying another book, based on its cover shown at Amazon, which did not prepare me at all to the book content. In fact, I expected a different technique than that presented in the book. The projects wonderful, transferred pretty clearly and accompanied by clear and beautiful images.
Too bad you can not look at the content of the book on Amazon.
The book is recommended for all paper crafts lovers.
