Product Description

Product Description

Rosina, a young gypsy girl, has been wandering over the countryside with her brothers, eventually ending up in the New Forest where she attracts the attention of Squire Denny. The squire takes her home with him, initially into service in his household. But what neither of them realise is that their lives are going to be changed forever .

This is a compelling read that takes the reader back to a bygone age which, however, is resuscitated with convincing dramatic tension-from the intrigue and shady dealings of a country estate to the theatrical, sophisticated yet sometimes bawdy life of London.

4.0 out of 5 stars Well Worth it, 23 Oct 2009
This review is from: A Rose and A Star: A Historical Novel (Paperback)
The story moved along at a good pace, with lots of authentic material. West has clearly done her research, taking the reader into a world where fairness and justice barely exists. The poor and women are the victims, whilst the rich and powerful take what they want. The plot is hardly bland, but powerful and moving. It is one of those books I couldn't put down. The book would benefit though, from a re-edit to rid of the few errors. Apart from that it is well worth reading.

4.0 out of 5 stars `A ROSE AND A STAR'--A GRIPPING ROMANCE, 11 Nov 2008

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: A Rose and A Star: A Historical Novel (Paperback)
I think that Gloria West has a very imaginative and sometimes overactive mind.

However, the excessive number of named characters throughout the novel were to my mind confusing at times.

I must admit that the chapters being short in length were a benefit.

To sum it up at the end I feel that this novel is really more a man's type of book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Two novels for the price of one can't be bad!, 6 Sep 2008
This review is from: A Rose and A Star: A Historical Novel (Paperback)
This is a lively story following the adventures of gypsy Rose and her daughter Star along with a host of characters varying from the good to the downright evil during the 1700s.
