Product Description

From the acclaimed international best-selling British author Saffina Desforges (Sugar & Spice) comes a sensational new crime thriller series.

Snow White ~ Book one of the Rose Red series

Cass 'Red' Rose is a feisty female cop fighting the usual battles that go with being a senior detective in The London's Met. Most coppers go home at night and forget about it. Not so easy when you live with a leading criminal defence lawyer; as one fights to put them away, the other tries to get them off.

A priceless artefact is stolen en route from the Louvre to the Victoria & Albert Museum and now the mysterious Queenie wants The Hunstman to get it back. For Red the case is a distraction from the more pressing matters of a gang terrorising the London estates.

But when Red's boss and mentor is targeted by The Hunstman things get personal. Very
personal.

Set in modern-day London, Snow White is a fast-paced, gritty urban thriller that will leave you wondering whether fairy tales really do have happy endings.

*****Excerpt:*****

The Huntsman squatted in the bushes surrounding the extension to the main house. The early spring sun sinking fast behind the hills, the temperature plummeting with it. He blew into his hands as he watched the silent movie unfold before him. Staring at the two women through the window as they disrobed, feeling himself get hard at the thought of what was to come.

Acting Detective Chief Inspector Rose had less than an hour to live.

ROSE RED takes British crime thrillers in a new direction, with fast-paced, action-packed detective fiction, each based on the theme of a classic fairy tale. Forget plodding police procedurals. Think 'Ashes to Ashes' meets James Patterson's 'Women's Murder Club' .

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing . . . 29 Aug 2011

I have never done a review before but feel I have to write an alternative to all the 5 stars this book has already got. I previously read Sugar and Spice and really enjoyed it so was delighted to see another book by the same writer. And reading all the reviews I was really looking forward to it. But oh no . . . I always read to the very end but I am not even halfway through and think I will just give up. The 2 main characters are not that likeable and seem a very unlikely match. There is just too much swearing in the book - don't get me wrong I don't usually mind that in a novel, and in fact especially in a police setting is probably realistic enough but it's just all the time. The 'romantic' scenes between the 2 lead characters are just too much information. But the final icing on the cake for me is when the 11 year old daughter walks in on Mum and her lover wearing "a contraption" and it doesn't seem to be that big a deal (this is a police detective and a barrister). Its just inappropriate. And seems odd that most of the reviews (not all) have only ever reviewed Saffina Desforges 2 books. Call me cynical but seems that some reviewers are maybe biased. Sorry, but despite really enjoying her previous book this has totally put me off. Unlikely I would download any more even if it was a freebie.

After loving Sugar and Spice, I was over the moon to find more by this author but actually wish I hadn't now. I downloaded this to read on holiday and saved it as I guessed after Sugar and Spice it would be a treat. What a shame.
There are too many cliches. I didn't really get the Snow White aspect of it apart from Ruby always wanting to be read the fairy tale. There is the lesbian detective (Rose Red), her posh barrister lover who apparently can't cook or clean, the eastern european immigrant nanny, chauvinistic male detectives, kids who know more than they let on etc etc.
This could have been the start of a great series in the style of Simon Kernick or Peter James but is very disappointing. I was reading along , willing it to become better but it didn't and I may download future books in this series just to see if they improve rather than in eager anticipation of exciting reads. I was gripped by Sugar and Spice in its style, its content and how it dealt with the controversial subjects. Please Saffina get back to this style of writing!
