One of my kids' favourite children's books, and one I never minded reading again and again (and again...!) Rose and her very appealing, slightly quirky family move into their new house, delighting in their homey family life, with a good number of animals as well, when one day a ball goes astray into their neighbour's garden, the old and crabby Mr Wintergarten. Braving all the neighbourhood rumours and determined to retrieve her ball, Rose goes in to meet her neighbour -- and succeeds in breaching the divide between young and old, colour and monochrome, miserable and joyful. The illustrations are a total delight and the writing makes this real and charming, not saccharine and too idealistic -- Rose has real character. Highly recommended!!
