The book "Rose" sees Blair dispatched to Wigan by his patron to investigate the disappearance of a young curate. Blair, although initially uninterested in the disappearance except as a way of earning passage back to his beloved Africa, becomes embroiled in the goings-on of a Victorian mining town and the secrets it hides. The setting of the book is a wonderful depiction of the dark and dangerous mining industry, with imagery that will send shivers down your spine. Blair is sent on a rollercoaster from the physical violence of "purring" among the miners to the madness of the family who owns the mines. The only real help, though unwilling, that he receives from either world is the aloof Rose - a Wigan mining girl who's not quite what she seems. Altogether a fascinating story that'll leave you on the edge of your seat while giving you a curiosity about the Victorian industrial age. Very good read!
