Amazon Review

After 14 years of being beaten, Rose Daniels wakes up one morning and leaves her husband -- but she keeps looking over her shoulder, because Norman has the instincts of a predator. And what is the strange work of art that has Rose in a kind of spell? In this brilliant dark-hued fable of the gender wars, Stephen King has fashioned yet another suspense thriller to keep readers right on the edge. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent 16 May 2008
By John
Format:Paperback
Rose Madder is an excellent read, I can't recommend it enough. It starts off rather slow, but Rose's journey from Buffalo to Chicago (for some reason the names of the cities are never mentioned but it is wasy to work out with a map and city references etc.) and how she copes in her new life are fascinating. Then, in the second half of the book, the husband she was fleeing from tracks her down and kills anyone who gets in his way. In creating Norman Daniels I think King has created one of his mightiest monsters - far scarier than the vampire in Salem's Lot, the cop in Desperation or even Randall Flagg.
The descriptions of Norman's killing spree in Chicago do not make for easy reading, and is some of the most grizzly and disturbing stuff I have ever read by King. The only odd thing is the supernatural element to this book, it is totally unexpected (and initially unwelcome) but doesn't take up too many pages. Rose Madder would make an awesome and terrifying film, with or without the supernatural stuff, and I found I cared for what happened to Rose much, much more than I cared about Jessie in Gerald's Game or Dolores Claiborne, as her development is gradual and enormous.
One of King's better works from the 1990's.

Wow! This is a great book! If you're really into horror, suspense and you love frighteningly realistic gory bits in a book, then you have got to read this!
The storyline of Rose Madder is really good. It might seem quite simple to outsiders to King's work but once you're only a couple of pages into it, you begin to see him twist our world into something quite different...
Throughout this book there is enough suspense to catch hold of even the hardiest of readers and I guarantee that you WILL NOT be able to put it down! Norman is a really strong character who everyone will love to hate, and who brings most of the suspense into the book with his wicked ways. Any sane female who reads this book will love Rosie as to me, she is the ultimate in girl power! She grows so much as a character and i promise, you will travel along with her, feeling her triumphs, her emotions and generally rooting for her when she has to finally face her past.
The ending of this book some might say seems....well...unfinished? No way. If you've got the imagination, then you'll realise that Stephen King has left us with just enough to think about...
Rose Madder was the first Stephen King book I ever read and since then I have gone on to read about 26 more but it still remains one of, if not my favourite book.
Watch out...Really Rosie is definately a big deal!

3.0 out of 5 stars frustrating 4 Sep 2001
Format:Paperback
King has written many good books, but this one is disappointing. it is superbly told, and very compulsive up to about pge 300-ish, where a supernatural element is intorduced to the story which does not work at all and seems far fetched and silly, compared to the rest of the story. if he had only kept this book to a chase-thriller then i would rank among his best, but alas. His imagination has actually got the better of him.

3.0 out of 5 stars Promising start, fairly average overall 10 Oct 2011
By Chris
Format:Paperback
I suppose i would sum up this story as OK. It starts well and progresses with a promising storyline. However, I think the supernatural element spoils it because it turns a believable story into something that seems a bit, well silly. Perhaps it would have been better if, like some of King's other stories, it had remained in the real world. Still worth a read though.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great book. 7 April 2004
Format:Paperback
Not one of my favourite of Mr King's, but a great read just the same. It made me feel slightly uncomfortable sitting in a darkened room after reading this, but it is a fascinating and also satisfying read. Revenge is the key word and I loved every moment of it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant 5 Jun 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
One of his best works. He builds the character of Rose and you find yourself on edge and rooting for her. I love the magic of the supernatural element and the final task is purely gripping!! I love the mythological feel to the story. I've read this book about 3 times and I am now downloading it onto my Kindle to read after The Talisman. A fabulous Summer read!! :-)

Very good storyline at first but then becomes silly as they step into the picture followed by the psychotic husband. All verypredictable and silly. The ending spoilt a good plot. Shame as it could have been better.
