5.0 out of 5 stars Completely under-rated, 21 Feb 2004
By Sue Lewendon "Film fanatic" (England) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
I found this to be a very good book. Many people feel that it's not one of King's best works, but I disagree. There is plenty here for a true King fan. There is plenty of gore, a romance and a terrific baddie. There is also another infamous book crossover here. One of the female characters also turns up in the two simultaneously released novels, The Regulators and Desperation.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and am not ashamed to say that I was scared in places. I was not frightened by the supernatural stuff in the painting, but by the heroine's husband. He may be a cop, but he is evil and he got right under my skin. Some of the things he does are truly awful and quite graphic. This wouldn't stop me from recommending it though and it's one I will definately re-read.

Please don't take all the reviews to heart, not even this one. My only suggestion is that you pick up the book next time you see it and read the description. If it sounds like your kind of story, read it. If it doesn't, don't.

I hope you will give it a go.

1.0 out of 5 stars King of Boredom, 10 Sep 2002
By A Customer
Nothing can sum up my sheer disappointment at this read. There were occasions when I was riveted but I could count them on the fingers of one hand. Too often the pace was raised only to throttle itself back to 1st gear.

This could easily have been a 250 page book and it would have been a hell of a lot more exciting.

The 'Dream Sequence' at 60 pages or whatever almost made me stick the book back in the shelf and leave it for some other poor sod to read.

Terrible book....sorry!!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars GRIPPING LATE NIGHT PAGE-TURNER, 30 Jul 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Rose Madder (Hardcover)
This is very complex and thought out! It'll keep you on the edge of your seat until the last page. Although, in some parts it's a bit too sci-fi.

This book had the strongest characters in any other book I read. I didn't care for the actual story, though. The idea of going inside a painting is a bit upidstay. Read more

2.0 out of 5 stars Not bad material, but clearly not up to Mr. King's standards
Like many readers of Stephen's novels, I am disappointed he has taken an opportunists' approach to writing about 'social causes' for the sake of expanding his financial worth. Read more
