Amazon.co.uk Review

Bette Midler plays a Janis Joplin-like singer overwhelmed by stardom and its excesses. Mark Rydell (On Golden Pond) directs what is a kind of hybrid showcase for Midler's concert talents and a standard pop biopic, with the usual rhythms of desire, success, betrayal, failure, and such. Alan Bates is the best thing about the movie as the Rose's ruthless manager, and Harry Dean Stanton and Frederic Forrest add some interesting seasoning. But as a whole, the film can't rise above its mixed purposes or clichés. --Tom Keogh

5.0 out of 5 stars NEVER A MAJOR BETTE FAN BUT THIS IS OUTSTANDING, 11 Nov 2005
The one thing i see when i look at this film is the huge promising start Bette Midler gave to her first motion picture and that there was a genuine future film megastar.
Fast forward to 2005 and she has and never will top her oscar nominated roll in 'The Rose' and its a shame to have seen her take on such run of the mill comedies in the early 80s and 90s.Don't get me wrong 'Big Buisness' ' Outrageous Fortune' and 'Hocus Pocus' are all good little entertaining comedies but when you look at The Rose you just wanna say 'What happend in your film role decisions'.She could have become a serious Hollywood actress.
The film is stunning with the high point being the live stage performances which are incredible.Theres no doubt the lady can sing and her voice on tracks like 'When a man loves a woman' and 'Midnight in Memphis' are astounding. She gets the whole Joplin rock star down to a tee and plays it like she was born for the roll. The camera work capturing her on stage persona is awesome the only slightly dissapointing part is the end at her homecoming Texas show.
It easy to see why she was nominated for an oscar as this is hugley entertaining and touching. She is some parts reminds me more of Stevie Nicks that Janis Joplin and they get the whole rock lifestyle to a tee.
Midler has only had 2 other films to match the success and following that this got 'Beaches ' and 'The First Wives Club' but still they pale in comparison.Outstanding.

5.0 out of 5 stars This was Bette's first Rose, 3 Dec 2000
This review is from: The Rose [VHS] [1979] (VHS Tape)
Bette's first ever film. I cannot really think of how to describe this movie. In essence it gives a story of a conglomerate character that represents many of the female 'go for broke' rock stars of the 70's. Most recognisably Janis Joplin.

The Rose (Midler) needs a break from performing, and in due course promises her new partner that after she plays her home town she will take a year out and get sober. The Rose later realises that her love of performing is too great for a year out. Her partner leaves her and she takes every pill, every drug she can find, and then collapses on stage in a highly dramatic almost disturbing final scene.

I realise as I read back over the few lines of utter garbage that I have written that I will never be able to express my feelings about this film in words, it is a film that has to be watched.

As Bette Midler's greatest fan, all I can say is that her acting is flawless. I have seen films such as "that old feeling" and "outrageous fortune" in which everyone including our dear Bette is very over the top and I was quite shocked when I saw "The Rose". Bette's acting is true and gritty realism, she deserved the golden globe and she should have got the Oscar.

One last remark, if you are expecting a "CC Bloom" character from this film, um... DON'T!!!!

Buy this film otherwise Fr Christmas will realise you have been naughty and will never bring you presents again!!!!

I think I'm right in saying this was Bette's first movie, the lady deserved an oscar for her performance. The sheer brilliance of her performance put her and this movie as one of the best of all times. If you have not seen this before buy it, it is one of those movies you will never forget.

3.0 out of 5 stars The Rose??
A bit disappointing, same scenario as many rock stars / singers, very commonplace, but passes and hour or so being mildly entertained.
