Product Description

The complete TV mini-series based on the novel by Rosamunde Pilcher. The series is set amidst a famous but struggling Scottish estate in the hands of the Aird family. The Airds go back for centuries and are inexorably entwined with the history of the estate. However, grave divisions amongst the surviving members of the family, who include Violet (Eileen Atkins), Edmund (Charles Dance) and Laura (Rebecca Night), threaten to bring to the fore elements of their ancestral past they would rather forget.

Product Description

Balnaird House, one of the most splendid estates in the Scottish Highlands, is the home of the ancient and venerable Aird family and - it will turn out - of many family secrets held tightly by Violet, aging matriarch of the Aird clan. Henry Aird passed the family home into the hands of the family business when overtaken by debt. This becomes a problem when his insatiable son-in-law Noel becomes chairman and suddenly the entire family fortune and its heritage are at stake. With corporate wheels spinning, heads and hearts are too, as Henry's daughter Laura is torn by heartache and her own lineage is questioned; Henry's friendship with the wealthy Balmerino family is at risk from shocking revelations; and who is the beautiful and mysterious Olivia, inheritor of a vital balance of the family company's shares? Secrets and heartbreak, passion and betrayal, innocence and greed - all human emotion is about to be played out on the Aird estate as this tale unfolds in light and darkness, in Shades of Love.

5.0 out of 5 stars NO WARNINGS ABOUT BAD LANGUAGE HERE! 22 Feb 2013
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
Rosamund Pilcher always tells a good story I enjoyed this DVD. It is not serious drama and one of the main characters is very affected with a really annoying voice and silly mannerisms, but do watch it as the family intrigues are even more intriguing than usual!

3.0 out of 5 stars great setting 12 Sep 2013
Format:DVD
i loved thesetting of this mini series, and all the love story and triangles if you want to call it that, but one of the main character has a very very irritating voice and excruciating to watch her talk! at some point she talks as if she makes herself sound like a childish lolita with an irritating mouth!!

2.0 out of 5 stars shades of love 7 Feb 2013
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
Even though the actors are good, the whole thing felt like an amateur film.
I like Pilcher's stories, enjoy reading her books, but was very disappointed by the quality of this mini-series.

4.0 out of 5 stars Shades of love 2 Feb 2013
Format:DVD
Wonderful film, beautifully photographed by James Aspinall. Evocative scenes. I have only given it four stars because in the first disc there are a number of intimate love scenes which are rather long drawn out and we fast-forwarded through them and through a scene or two of the youngsters chatting round tables in a cafe. However these scenes were not to our taste and didn't seem strictly relevant and we wanted to get on with the story. These apart, the story whose synopsis is on the back of the box is well told and the tension slowly builds up. Charles Dance who plays Edmund Aird is the patriach with his American second wife Virginia and his mother Violet all live in this wonderful Scottish castle with lovely gardens and interior rooms. Their relations Archie and his wife with son, Hamish and daughter Lucilla live in a smaller version fairly nearby. Edmund and Virginia have offspring, Laura, who plays a major part in the story, sister Alexandra who is married to Noel in a senior position of the Aird Company in London and two small children, and Henry the eldest. The story revolves round Laura's love life, sometimes with acute disappointment and then being torn two ways. Noel is the philandering villain who while being married to Alexandra, seduces her best friend, Lucilla (Archie's daughter) which leads to acrimony. On the demise of Edmund's mother Violet at the start of the second disc, her will starts a fascinating tale of background which has severe repercussions on their lives today. All the Aird family hold shares in the company. I won't report too much otherwise it will spoil your enjoyment of an excellent film. We have many of the other and in some ways this one continues where September ended. Read more ›

Lovely scenery, props and costume but with the exception of Charles Dance the acting was nauseating. The story line was long and protracted and sickly. What a waste of time!

5.0 out of 5 stars Pilcher Never Disappoints 30 Mar 2014
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
This was first class from beginning to end. A wonderful plot as usual and with that undercurrent of emotion that Pilcher always captures...remember the Shell Seekers? Loss and sadness abound in this too. Many hours of enjoyment here and you won't be disappointed. Excellent. I only wish Pilcher was still writing...her story lines are sorely missed.

Rocamund Pilcher is a wonderful author. So often these films do not do the author justice - but - this certainly does!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Shades of Love
I love Rosamunde Pilcher as a writer and though I enjoyed this film I found it unnecessary to be so explicit in the 'love' scenes and would have preferred them to be understated.
