Product Description

Manufacturer's Description

The release of version 4 of RootsMagic brings about a change in the way you can carry both the software and data around with you.

Lugging a laptop is not ideal, but how else are you to carry your family tree in your pocket to relatives, archives and libraries? Version 4 allows you to carry all your information and software on a USB stick using RootsMagic To-Go.

This is the only family history software that can run directly from a USB stick, it allows you to install both the program and your data onto a 250 MByte or larger memory stick from your PC.

The new release of RootsMagic also adds the following new features to what was already the leading package according to many reviewers.

This Edition includes four CDs containing:
Bartholomew's 1898 Royal Atlas of England and Wales
The National Gazetteer 1868
Video Tutorial
Online subscription to www.BMDINDEX.co.uk.

This package also includes £1,620-worth of vouchers off the British Data Archive Census CD sets and a printed "Quick Start" manual.

Lots of work to enter the data I've collected but the little things Roots Magic does makes a tedious job bearable. Add ing pictures is a breeze. Simplicity with a delightful feeling of success.

I like some of the features of ~RM4 but some I find a bit cumbersome. My old program used to allow me to put all the info about one person on one page but with RM4 it is spread over two or three pages. I particularly miss being able to see a person's offspring on his or her main page.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not that magical, 12 Mar 2011
This review is from: RootsMagic 4 UK Deluxe Edition (PC CD) (CD-ROM)
For a 'first timer' entering basic data is pretty intuitive and it imports existing GEDCOM files with ease - the problem arises when adding additional information where, no doubt in an effort to make it easy to use, the whole thing gets unnecessarily complicated. Adding a note to an individual is fine, but if that note happens to be related to census information then you're required to make a decision, does it go with the general notes? does it go with census notes? It is all these extra (and frankly unncessary) 'bits and pieces' which would leave a novice wondering what data they've entered and where. Reports are OK, but amending the sentences accompanying each individual is less easy than the program would have you believe and, if you don't do it, each individual's name is going to be followed by 'Anyone Anyone ANYONE has the reference number 123'

There is a 30 minute video tutorial included on the main disc which is helpful so far as it goes, but a beginner is certainly going to need it. Whilst there is a 'UK version', the tutorial has an American voice-over and clearly the software is still heavily geared towards the American market. Also included are 3 extra discs - none of which are essential and could quite easily be omitted.

The biggest drawback is in its ability to produce an 'all person' chart and the variety of reports it offers which, whilst appearing to be plentiful, differ so little from one another that most are superfluous.

Personally I'd recommend a much cheaper program which doesn't purport to have 'bells & whistles' you're never going to use, or a slightly more expensive one which delivers a much better user-friendly specification.
