Chances are anyone thinking of buying this already has the hugely over-rated Roots anyway, so this review is for those of you wondering whether or not to shell out for the second disc.

First and foremost, this is a proper, decent re-release from back in the days when Roadrunner made more of an effort than one or two bonus tracks and a poorly-shot documentary. A full CD of twenty songs as well as extensive liner notes and rare images, there's a fair bit of effort put into this release. The only thing is, it's a bit of a mixed bag when it comes to the actual songs, many of which are alternate mixes barely different from the original or live versions taken from the Under Siege video from 1991. These tracks and the Scott Burns mixes of the Arise tracks are the only exclusives here: all other tracks have since been added to reissues, some appear on the vastly superior compilation Blood-Rooted. The alternately mixed tracks are barely distinguishable from the original versions either, save for a bit of extra reverb. The cover versions are much more interesting, featuring fiesty versions of Dead Kennedys, R.D.P and Mutantes songs. The best track on offer here is easily the immensely fun "Anticop" an upgrade of an older less-valid song about Satan, now reflective of Max Cavalera's hatred for the police.

Overall, for those who don't have Roots this is the best version of that album to buy, as that way you'll get a bit more value for your money. However, for those already in possession of the rest of the band's major releases, this has extremely little value.

this is the fourth Sepultura album I bought, the first being the fantastic Roorback, then the disappointing Nation, then the captivating Under A Pale Gray Sky, and now this, an amazing album, I had already heard most of the album at a friend's house, and decided that I needed it. So I decided to get the special edition version. Well, the original version of Necromancer on disc 2, what an amazing song, now I have to get Morbid Visions. The main album Roots is also very good, but i prefer the thrashier approach of disc 2, overall definitely worth the money, so go stragiht for this as your first Sepultura album.

The roots is the best album brought to us by this great band, and the roots of sepultura only makes it even better. Must have for everyone, who enjoys metal!

For people who are considering getting roots, this album is definately worth a few extra quid. It is also a valuable addition to any seps fans record collection as it not only contains the roots cd but 20 other rare and live tracks. Whilst these 20 tracks are not up to the standard set by roots they are true to 80s/early 90s heavy metal - you dont get much heavier than this! This contains some very rare stuff, like the first ever sepultura recording, but don't expect great quality of sound on a couple of the demos(particularly the necromancer demo), which were recorded on 8-track recorders as that was all that was available to them in the early days! In the inlay card for this CD is information on all the rare and live tracks and this is worth getting if you are a devoted sepultura fan.
