Album Description

While Maceo Parker is known around the world for his signature alto sax sound - an instantly recognizable blast of rhythmically-charged soul - he has never before been heard fronting a big band. The former James Brown sideman and P-Funk all-star rises to that challenge on `Roots & Grooves', his triumphant collaboration with Germany's WDR Big Band Cologne.

Recorded live on tour in Europe in February and March 2007, this dynamic two-CD set captures the iconic sax man in concert with the acclaimed 18-piece band, under the direction of arranger Michael Abene. On the first disc, they pay tribute to Ray Charles with lush orchestrations of Charles classics like "What'd I Say," "Hit The Road Jack," "I'm Busted" and "Hallelujah, I Love Her So." The second disc, which features the slamming rhythm tandem of drummer Dennis Chambers (formerly of P-Funk, currently of Santana) and bassist Rodney "Skeet" Curtis (formerly of P-Funk and Maceo's own band), consists of expanded big band renditions of Maceo originals, including "Off The Hook," "Uptown Up," "Shake Everything You Got" and his early `70s funk anthem "Pass The Peas."

A tale of 2 Halves 31 May 2011

One half of this double album relates to the funky side of Mr Parker, the other to his love of Ray Charles. The Ray Charles stuff is more melodic and to my mind ultimately more successful and memorable. The funky stuff is good if you are in the mood but sometimes it does feel like James Brown without the singer.

Great condition & great intro to a new kind of music for me. I saw him in Edinburgh recently and this cd brings back very happy memories.

Jazz may be one of the hardest words -let alone music genres- in the English language.

Lot's of different music falls into the "jazz" category -and when I say lot's I mean lot's-.

From the Bossa Nova -which I love and consider a genre itself- to the avant-gsrde european jazz, passing thru Be-Bop, Swing, Rag-Time, and Dixieland. All this is considered jazz, and I, at least, like it all -well, mostly-.

But, this particular CD is as jazzy as jazz itself. It's what I would listen and say -without any doubt- "this is Jazz".

The great Maceo here, does a little bit what Oscar Peterson did with Nigerian Market Place -IMHO, and saving the distance-, he's setting a new level in jazz.

So, in all, a great CD. One that now belongs to my essential list -that's on my phone, iPod, PS3, PCs...- :)
