Book Description

12 Sep 2012 Rookie Yearbook (Book 1)
The first print publication edited by Tavi Gevinson, the editor in chief of "Rookie," the website for teenage girls Tavi Gevinson started her personal blog, "Style Rookie" (http: //www.thestylerookie.com), in 2008, when she was eleven years old. It was a place where, from the confines of her bedroom in the suburbs, she could write about personal style and chronicle the development of her own. Within two years, the blog was averaging fifty thousand hits per day. Soon fashion designers were flying her around the world to attend and write about fashion shows, and to be a guest of honor at their parties.Soon Tavi's interests grew beyond fashion, into culture and art and, especially, feminism. In September 2011, when she was fifteen, she launched "Rookie" (http: //rookiemag.com), a website for girls like her: teenagers who are interested in fashion and beauty but also in dissecting the culture around them through a uniquely teen-girl lens. Rookie broke one million page views within its first six days. "Rookie Yearbook One "collects articles, interviews, photo editorials, and illustrations from the highly praised and hugely popular online magazine. In its first year, "Rookie" has established a large inclusive international community of avid readers. In addition to its fifty-plus regular writers, photographers, and illustrators (many of whom are teenage girls themselves), "Rookie"'s contributors and interviewees have included prominent makers of popular culture such as Lena Dunham, Miranda July, Joss Whedon, Jon Hamm, Zooey Deschanel, David Sedaris, Elle Fanning, Amy Poehler, Paul Rudd, John Waters, Chloe Sevigny, Liz Phair, Dan Savage, JD Samson, Ira Glass, Aubrey Plaza, Daniel Clowes, Carrie Brownstein, Paul Feig, Bethany Cosentino, Kimya Dawson, Fred Armisen, and Winnie Holzman. As a young teenager, Gevinson couldn't find what she was looking for in a teen magazine; "Rookie" is the one she created herself to fill that void. Her coolheaded intellect shines in "Rookie," arguably the most intelligent magazine ever made for a teen-girl audience. Gevinson writes with a humble but keen authority on such serious topics as body image, self-esteem, and first encounters with street harassment. She's equally deft at doling out useful advice, such as how to do a two-minute beehive, or how to deliver an effective bitchface. "Rookie"'s passionate staffers and faithful readers have helped make "Rookie" the strong community that it is.To date, Gevinson has written for "Harper's Bazaar," "Jezebel," "Lula," and "Pop," and is a contributing editor for "Garage" magazine. She has been profiled in "The New York Times" and "The New Yorker," and has been on the cover of "Pop," "L'Officiel," "Zeit""Magazin," and "Bust." As a speaker, she has made numerous presentations at venues such as IdeaCity, TEDxTeen, L2 Forum, and the "Economist" World in 2012 Festival. Last year Lady Gaga called her "the future of journalism."

5.0 out of 5 stars Rookie Yearbook 12 Sep 2012
By Laura
Format:Paperback
A must have for any thinking teenage (or older) young woman, full of valuable, fun and thought provoking articles, pictures, playlists and features. Super-blogger Tavi Gevinson has gathered a fantastic selection of writers, illustrators and photographers - many who are teenagers themselves - giving a refreshingly positive angle on the challenges and rewards of being young and female. Masses of content to entertain and absorb, provoke and stimulate for many hours. (Stickers and other goodies too!) A great gift!

I'm so glad that Rookie has been made into a book and now it's possible for us to own the magic! I am 22 and still absolutely love Rookie, you can be of any age to enjoy this book and I really wish that Rookie had been available to me when I was a teenager. For anyone who feels misunderstood, different, lonely, like they don't fit in, like they were destined for more or don't know what they were destined for, Rookie helps with all of that and more; it is the most positive role model a teenage girl could ask for.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unusual 31 May 2014

I loved this book and wanted to keep it for myself - that's why I rate it highly - but I deemed it too mature for a 12 year old. I think it depends on the individual child. The book is very well done and interesting just not the right fit for my niece.

5.0 out of 5 stars A teenage dream 18 May 2014
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I had been a fan of RookieMag.com for almost 2 years before I finally got round to purchasing this book, and I immediately ordered the 2nd Yearbook after the first had arrived... it is just gorgeous! Actually having all the artwork, photo shoots and articles as something tangible in my hands really enhances the experience. The articles are witty, intelligent, written BY teenage girls FOR teenage girls. They tackle everything from feminism, privilege and sexual abuse to midnight snacking, mastering the "b*tchface" and learning not to care what people think of you. For those of you who are parents buying this for a younger teenager, there IS a significant chunk of sex talk and education etc. in here, but it is all very intelligently discussed and cleverly put together, and Rookie is far better than the glossy 'teenage girl' magazines when it comes to body image, sex and contemporary/personal issues. However, intelligent content aside, my personal favourites were the cute free gifts (stickers, a paper crown and a flexidisc) and the beautiful photoshoots. I am so glad I discovered Rookie when I did. BUY THIS BOOK :)
