No one can weave a more terrifying tale than Graham Masterton. He takes a fascinating myth or legend and through his marvelous writing abilities weaves a spellbinding tale of terror. This is one of his best. A malevolent entity pursues a young man and his father to Los Angeles from Alaska ... due to something the father did. You'll find the origin of THE SNOWMAN absolutley captivating and horrific. A definite read for the horror genre fan.

Jim Rook vs. Mr. Freeze 18 May 2012
By KinksRock - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
In this one, Jim Rook, the special ed. teacher who can see dead people (Masterton has compared him to a supernatural Gabe Kotter), is up against a spirit who, because it is blind, is invisible even to Rook, who is apparently stalking one of Rook's students, and who freezes things. Oh, and a cat is defrosted after showing up in one of the spirit's ice blocks. The cat has some significance to the back story, but it's never adequately explained.

Average Masterton. Not one of his great ones, not one of his terrible ones. I never felt fully absorbed in the story.
Graham Masterton rocks it again... 12 May 2012
By Thomas Rydder - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
The fourth installment in the "Rook" series, Snowman finds Jim Rook coming to the aid of an Uniut college student in his class. The story manages to wind in some of the Uniut (read Eskimo) culture and superstitions into the modern-day world, and Graham does what he always does - keeps the reader on the edge of the seat. Mr. Rook has a wry wit, and his ability to see the paranormal allows him to function in our world, observe beings in several others, and keep his own life on an even keel, even allowing a romantic interest to peek it's head around the corner. Superbly written, with constant action and suspense. To my disadvantage, I picked this read up at the local library, not being familiar, and also not realizing it was the fourth in a series. I am about to make a beeline back, to search out the first three. You should too.
Left me cold 3 Sep 2001
By Ron - Published on Amazon.com

My first read of a Masterson book, and I am not sure I will pursue his others. The premise is an interesting one, but I found most of the characters unsympathetic -- including the main one, Jim Rook. The writing wasn't a complete turn-off, but did get annoying in spots. As for the hands-on-the-frozen-rail episode, Mr. Masterson obviously doesn't believe that less is more.
