Product Description

Animated fun for kids with Roobarb and Custard in their updated 2005 digital incarnation, which maintains all the characteristics of their original cult adventures narrated as in the 1970's, by Richard Briers. 30 years after their first creation, the cult animation icons return in further re-runs of the vintage episodes. Each show retains the wit, the music, the simple colouring and of course the stories of Roobarb's good intentions and wacky contraptions never quite going to plan, much to the amusement of Custard and all their friends in the garden.

I purchased this dvd in November 2007, along with volume 1, and inside the dvd case was an insert advertising Roobarb and Custard Too - Volume three and Volume four.
Now, September 2010, and still no sign of the last two volumes!

What has happened? Bankruptcy? Company lost interest? What reason could there be for not completing the set?
Volumes 1 and 2 are great, but we want the complete series!

That grievance out of the way, I will get on with reviewing this dvd. (The title, Roobarb and Custard Too, is to probably allow for the fact that most people seem to think that the original series was called Roobarb and Custard, when in fact it was just called Roobarb).

This 2005 series differs from the original in that the music has a new arrangement, though still the same great tune, (who could forget it? Diddely do, diddely do, diddedly doo-dee-doo) and the picture seems more polished, though still the same wobbly effect we all know and love.
What were only minor characters in the orginal, now feature largely in this updated version. Namely Poodle Princess and Moggy Malone, the latter of which featured once in the orginal Roobarb series, as Custard's alley-cat girlfriend. Personally I would have preferred these two characters to not have featured much at all as I find them irritating, especially Moggy Malone, but the inclusion of Mouse from Silicon Valley is a delightful addition. The mole is either a different mole or has acquired a complete makeover with totally different voice and appearance.

As always with Roobarb, all the episodes are funny and though slightly lacking the ultimate sheer unsurpassed brilliance of the original Roobarb series, Roobarb and Custard Too is still an absolute joy to watch. - Which makes it even more annoying that we only have half the series on dvd!

So, please, put this right as soon as possible and allow us to complete the set. Completists among us are feeling the loss.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another gem 29 Mar 2010
This is the second volume from the new series. Most re-makes totally miss the charm and appeal of the original, but this has the same writer, the same WONDERFUL Richard Briers, the same nutty music and the same mad shaking animation from the show's first series from way back. Let the memories flood out! Oh and the children love it too.....

Anyone who grew up in the 70s will remember the zany cartoon antics of Roobarb & Custard. Roobarb the bright green dog who invents crazy machines in the garden shed and his arch nemesis Custard the purple cat who is always on hand to throw a comedy spanner in the works. This new series of shows carries on where most of us left off in our childhood; great puns and wordplay for all the kids in the room and a huge dollop of nostalgia for everyone else, fun for all the family.
