Book Description

Jun 1994
Ronia lives with her father, a robber chieftain, and his band of men in their fortress on the top of a mountain. On the night Ronia was born, a bolt of lightning split the stronghold in two, leaving a huge chasm - Hell's Gap - in between.

Soon Ronia is old enough to explore the forest around her, but she must beware of the grey dwarfs and wild harpies that live there. One day she meets Birk, the son of a rival robber leader who has claimed the other side of Hell's Gap, and upon whom Ronia's father instantly declares war.

Ronia and Birk develop a friendship that is as indestructible as the mountain fortress itself. But with their families sworn enemies they are forced to keep their friendship a secret until one fateful day when Ronia's father catches Birk . . . prompting Ronia and Birk to escape into the woods and fend for themselves.

How long can Ronia and Birk survive in the magical forest? And will their fathers ever put aside their differences to get their beloved children back?

5.0 out of 5 stars Ronia, one of my childhood's best books 29 Jan 1997
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
I was about eight when I first got this book as a Christmas present from my parents. The story tells of a young girl born into a band of robbers during 'a dark and stormy night.' The robbers, whose leader Ronia's father is, live in a castle that was split in half by lighting the night Ronia was born. The other half of the castle is inhabited by a rival group of robbers whose leader has a son the same age as Ronia. One summer Ronia meets Birk, her counterpart, in the woods, and the children start a secret friendship.

Filled with wholesome adventures in the woods, interesting creatures (none of them TOO scary), and a conflict of families that gets solved in the end, the book is a delight. This book remains one of my favorite books from childhood, one that I read many times and always looked forward to reading again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful for both adults and children 9 Jan 1999
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
I received this book when I was about 10 years old. I have now read it for my daughter who is 6. She absolutely loves it as well as other Astrid Lindgren stories. Since we are Swedish we have read almost everything by this fabulous author, but I believe Ronia is one of my daughters absolute favorites. I urge everyone who have enjoyed anything by Astrid Lindgren to browse through all her books. You will not be disappointed, regardless of age!

A beautiful book. The familial relationships and questions of Ronia echo every inquisitive child, and the magic of the forest, along with its inhabitants will enthrall any active imagination. Thoroughly recommend this book for children of any age and adults who like to believe in trolls, gnomes, harpies and spirits.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best book I have ever read! 3 Nov 1998
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
I am 11 years old and this is the best book I have ever read. Ronia is adventurous and willing to do to anything she puts her mind to. She is not afraid to go out in the woods and is able to take care of herself. The book made me feel like I was Ronia! After finishing the book, I almost wanted to read it again! I recommend this book to anyone!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Lovely 29 Aug 1998

Format:Paperback
I also read this book as a little girl and couldn't put it down. Ronia is exactly how I want my daughters to be someday: independent, fierce, adventurous, and willing to use moss as a pillow.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent role model 25 Mar 1998
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
I read the book both as a child and as an adult, and I feel it's one of the greatest books written for children as well as adults. Both Ronia and Birk are great role models, and even with the emergence of other strong literary role models for girls, this is a must-read for girls (as well as female adults as there is little emphasis on gender-typing. The English translation by Patricia is very close to the original, and hence, offers a great reading experience.

5.0 out of 5 stars A CHILDHOOD FAVORITE 14 Mar 1999
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
I read this book when I was in elementary school. I am now an adult, and have not read it since; however, I feel quite confident in giving it an excellent review. Somehow, I was surprised that the reading level is so low...despite the fact that I was so young when I read it, it still appeals to me, so I feel like it ought to be a grown-up book that my extremely mature ten-year-old self just happened to read. Regardless, it's a marvelous book which makes the reader want to live in the forest with the bands of thieves and be just like Ronia (or, for boys, her forbidden friend, whose name escapes me). A great read!

5.0 out of 5 stars A childhood classic in this teachers memory 3 Dec 1998
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
This book was a favorite of mine when I was in elementary school. Now as a second grade teacher, I look forward to sharing this tale of adventure, friendship, and anti-stereotyped characters with the children in my class. I fully recommend this book to children who love adventure and fantasy. Enjoy!!!
