Review

"Compelling... You have to admire the stones it takes to set out his stall. But then, it's entirely in keeping with how he played." (Irish Times, Best Sports Books of the Year)

"Anyone interested in life coaching or self-awareness will be fascinated by O'Gara's revealing and unabashed self-analysis." (Irish Independent, Best Sports Books of the Year)

"Adroitly constructed... his reflections on his recently concluded playing career contain enough cordite to remind one of the searing honesty and single-mindedness that drove this individual to perfection. Few escape his wrath." (Irish Independent)

"A rollicking read... he speaks with naked emotion, raw candour, and even that rare commodity in sportsmen, forthrightness." (Sunday Independent)

"Revealing... Unguarded is a reflection on a playing career that saw him earn the respect of the rugby world and win almost all the game has to offer. Off the field, the Corkman was known for his phlegmatic pronouncements and this book is marked out by similar straight-talking." (Sunday Business Post)

HAted Ronan O' Gara unless he played for the Lions or Munster as he was too often responsible for Ireland beating Wales. This book is great. Unbelievably for sportsmen he tells the truth. Well worth a read

Was really looking forward to this book and it does give a decent insight into the life of a professional sportsman, but overall I was disappointed. It feels like a rush job, thrown out for the Christmas market off the back of O Gara calling it a day. He touches on interesting material (his difficult relationship with Jonny Sexton, Declan Kidney dropping him from the Ireland squad, his close friendship with Brian O Driscoll), but never covers any of these subjects in depth, and there is a sense of punches being pulled. A lot of the book is very technical too and would only appeal to the hardcore rugby fan I feel. Unguarded is a cut above the usual sporting autobiography but considering the man involved you would still expect the book to be better than this. If you are interested in sporting autobiographies Tony Cascarino's is the one to beat, the level of honesty in Cascarino's puts 99% of these books to shame.

I rated Ronan's book for several reasons. 1 Honesty, he wrote with depth and equal sincerity about the hurts as well as the triumphs; the best example being when he was dropped from the Irish squad in 2013. He then goes on to write of the day to day commitment to his sport and his team especially, feelings about fellow players, coaches, referees though a little understated are clear and concise. Throughout the book Ronan's very idealistic view of the the standards as shown on the pitch and indeed required at the very highest level of the sport are very transparent. It would appear to be able to pass on these ideals and skills to future players is his possible holy grail as a future coach. 2 The highs and the lows are portrayed without any self pity, this combined with an almost humble recognition of personal talents is a strong recognition of one's self worth and has potential to strike a chord in many a young or potential young player of the future.

Excellent read. One of the best biography's of recent generations of players. It has very honest views on current players, coaches and rugby in general.

Being a proud Welshman I was initially sceptical about purchasing this book. I shouldn't have been!! The book is a fantastic read for all rugby supporters and gives an honest and candid account of what being a truly top class rugby player is all about. All of Ronans thoughts are portrayed brilliantly throughout the book. If you like rugby and like autobiographies, then go and buy it. You will not be disappointed!!!!!

Now this was different, again.

Although it was, another, enjoyable read, it was very technical and gave the impression - all the way through - ROG is not finished with Irish Rugby. Confirmed, towards the end by the confession of his coaching ambitions.

Whether that will be with Munster or, all the way, with Ireland, I wish you nothing but good luck.

Bought this for my boyfriend for Christmas as he's a big Munster and rugby fan in general. He read it from cover to cover in no time. I've even dipped into it and quite enjoyed it.
