It was absolute chaos which is just the way Ron would have wanted it. Rolling Stone

Recorded live at the Michigan Theater on 19 April 2011, this heartfelt tribute/celebration of Stooge guitarist Ron Asheton's life and music featured Iggy and the Stooges, Henry Rollins, and guest guitarist Deniz Tek (Radio Birdman). Includes a string section on a few Stooges classics! All proceeds go to the Ron Asheton Foundation which helps rescue animals.

During the concert, Iggy Pop commented to the crowd, "I need to thank Ron. He sort of peed this beautiful music all over me. When I started a band Ron was the first guy who got behind me. I owe him...I know he's trying to flick ashes on my head from heaven right now."

Asheton is ranked as number 29 on Rolling Stone's list of 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time. He has also played with The Wylde Ratttz, a band composed of some of punk and alt-rock's most renowned and respected musicians. The band included Mike Watt of the Minutemen, J. Mascis of Dinosaur Jr., Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth, and Mark Arm of Mudhoney.

*I only managed to watch this DVD for the first time on Saturday, not knowing that on the very same day his drummer brother Scott had also just passed away, very sad news.*

This is a great film covering the event. It is well put together. The package even comes with a 4 page booklet, it’s been a long time since I got one of those in a DVD. I like the interview clips preceding the gig, they add to the build up. I also enjoyed Henry Rollins’ rather long, but never dull, introduction speech.

A totally professionally filmed production, which is bit of an improvement on this labels other Stooges DVD’s (“Iggy & the Stooges Live in Detroit”, a kind of official bootleg and “Raw Power LIVE: In the Hand the Hands of the Fans”, a well filmed gig by a few fans with differing quality cameras). Except for the dodgy edit where Iggy and the band are walking off before the encore and there is a roadie walking across the stage who just fades out into the ether, lol! But that’s a small gripe.

The issue I really have is with the audio. The mix is a bit muddy and the stereo rather flat. It’s not as kick-ass as I would have liked! It’s also got the occasional drop-outs, so the music goes lower and muffles and then gets louder again, which is a pretty carless oversight by the mixer. I’m not sure if this DVD is mixed in 5.1, I couldn’t see an audio option in the menu and does not say on the back, but, unless I was listening to it in 2.0, I would have expected a good spatial surround sound mix over what it has.

Great show, somewhat compromised by a rather average, audio mix. If this DVD had the same gutsy mix as “Raw Power LIVE: In the Hand the Hands of the Fans”, - I have compeared them - , it would have been awesome. Even though they were both mixed by Max Bisgrove!

Also my copy is NTSC 0, and suffers from some slight motion distortion on some shoots because of this but, it is advertised as PAL format on Amazon.

Great Show 23 July 2013

Stooges rock the sold-out Michigan Theater in their home town Ann Arbor in a killer tribute to the late Ron Asheton. There are moving testimonials by Rons brother Scott and Henry Rollins. Iggy and the band rip through their Raw Power based set, with some surprises from Kill City and others. Deniz Tek from Radio Birdman takes over on guitar for a short set from the first two albums. There is backing and interludes by a small orchestra. For Stooge fans everywhere, this is an unusual and unique one-off event, not to be missed. James Williamson returns and Steve Mackay joins in a rave-up for the last tune, No Fun.

Sound quality and visuals are excellent, and the performances are great.

A masterpiece and a memorial both in one show. 7 Jan. 2014

I admit I eagerly awaited this release because I was at this show, and it didn't disappoint. How the Stooges could end up with a symphony orchestra behind them (for a few tracks) and make it work, I'll never know, but they did it without losing or compromising one iota. A masterpiece as well as a memorial.

Ron was an idol of mine since I heard his bass when Raw Power then I went back and listened to the first two stooges albums and all the other Stooges music music Ron played on and then the stuff after they broke up, Ron is dead, long live Ron.

This was a great show. It started off a little slow but picked up quickly. I was glad to see how well orchestra music and the stooges music worked together it just shows theirs still room to grow in music.
