Product Description

Romeo, Juliet and Darkness is a love story, a wartime thriller and a social commentary. Set during the Nazi occupation of Prague it tells the story of a male student who shelters a Jewish girl. He is her only link to the outside world and over time their relationship grows. Wonderfully shot in beautiful black and white photography the film examines the consequences of a young man's act of compassion in the face of the Nazi occupation. Weiss perfectly captures the fear of living under such conditions. This will be the first time this film has been made available on DVD.

5.0 out of 5 stars Powerful story of love, resistance and hope. 21 Oct 2008
Format:DVD
This is a little known, yet greatly moving 1960 film by Czech director Jiri Weiss.
It could be called a chamber piece as its strength lies in its simplicity and focus on the two central characters, Pavel and Hanka. Set almost entirely in a Prague housing block in 1942 during the German occupation, Pavel hides the Jewish girl Hanka in the attic, as she is about to be deported. A brief love story develops between the two, although the glimmer of hope that they experience is soon extinguished by brutal reality. The focus is fully on the two main characters, but the neighbours and Pavels family and schoolfriends play strong supporting parts.
Even though the appearances of the Nazi occupiers are kept to a minimum, the threat is omnipresent. The opening sequence of a single Jewish family packing up their belongings and walking up an empty Prague street to be deported in full day-light is incredibly striking and affecting.
Beautifully photographed on location with engaging actors, this film is greatly recommended.
Second Run should be congratulated in bringing to DVD films which have seldom, if ever been seen.

4.0 out of 5 stars great little-seen holocaust film 4 April 2001
By Kristopher Kincaid - Published on Amazon.com
"romeo, juliet and darkness," jiri weiss' story of a young man in prague who hides a jewish girl during the war is a moving and ultimately harrowing film that spares us the excesses of steven spielberg's "schindler's list." prior to "schindler" several amazing films about the holocaust were made in eastern europe though unfortunately the tendency today is to see spielberg's film, because it's a big-budget hollywood picture, as the ONLY film ever made on the subject. weiss lacks spielberg's sentimentality and his sermonizing and his film is the stronger of the two for it. although "schindler" was amazing and powerful in many ways it isn't the definitive statement on the subject and, unfortunately and through no outright fault of its own perhaps, it has eclipsed several outstanding films simply because it's not subtitled.
