Product Description

Manufacturer's Description

Rome: Total War: Barbarian Invasion commences just after the last Emperor of a unified Rome has died. His successors in Rome and Constantinople are now uneasy allies and rivals for power. The 'barbarians' are massing along the borders, and in some cases are living inside what used to be Roman territory.

Two hundred years have now passed since the main campaign in Rome: Total War. Players can now control vast armies and over 100 new units as they battle across an updated European map that now reflects the historical changes since Rome: Total War. Tear Rome apart by leading hordes of barbarians or stand and defend the Empire as a leader of one of the two former Romes, the Western and Eastern Empires.

Key features:

  • Newly designed campaign map; this reflects 200 years of change and turmoil to conquer new lands and new region boundaries.
  • Updated gameplay featuring the Hordes, Character Loyalty, and Roman Civil wars. Barbarians can also relocate to a new land after losing their last settlement, otherwise known as the "Barbarian Migration."
  • 10 new playable factions; expanded barbarian tech tree, 85 new units, 21 new buildings, ancillary characters, vices and virtues, military commands, holy relics and much more!
  • Night battles – Hugely atmospheric battles and combat effects with added tactical challenges.
  • Improved battle AI and tactics - Individual faction fighting styles, swimming units across rivers and various new tactics.

    Unleash hell! 28 Dec 2005
Im a big fan of the Total War series, and I think Rome Total War is the best. With Barbarian Invasion comes a whole new challenge, there are 10 new playable factions in campaign mode and way more in the custom battle setting, and new options such as starting as a Horde.

This is a much more difficult game, the problem is if you start as Barbarian Faction you only have one settlement, if you start as a Roman faction most of your settlements are ready to revolt and you have no money. Every faction is in the same boat, so everyone is trying to gain as much land as possible and no one wants to be your friend, and if they do beware they will betray you, sooner rather than later.

Playing as a Horde is a new option, this means you start without a settlement, but with a massive army, you have the option of sacking settlements, which is where you strip a settlement of anything of value then move on, or settling, but beware you lose part of your army with every settlement you settle in. Hordes are a thing to dread and prepare for when playing a settlement holding faction, just as you think youre doing a good job of managing your settlement 2000 Hun turn up and wipe you out! Be warned.

The introductory video sequences for each faction are missing and there are fewer factions to play as, its also frustrating to see the other factions warriors that you cant have in campaign mode, the Celts look mint! But these may become available with patches and cheats in the future.

    Still this is well recommended.

Rome: Total War 3 Sep 2006
    Fun:
If you're new to this style of grand strategy, then initially it will overpower you with all the game functions. However, persevere and what initially appears to be a simple conquer-the-world-with-big-battles game, soon turns out to be a quality strategy management event. It requires a lot of thought and long term planning, for example; building sewers in a town has an effect on the type and quality of troops that can be recruited. If you're an old hand at this sort of thing, then this is not just a progression along the long road to strategy gaming perfection. All in all, R:TW will appeal to virgins and veterans alike, whether playing a set piece battle (watching your elephants trample the enemy underfoot is particularly satisfying!) or the campaign game. Highly recommended.

    A worthy effort 6 Oct 2005
The BI expansion pack allows you to play as a number of factions and these vary in difficulty with regards to succesful completion of the campaign. On my first effort I played as the Western Rome faction (the hardest faction to play as), and having comleted Rome Total War on the most difficult settings, I thought this would be relatively easy, but I was wrong, very wrong. The problem is that you start with about 25 settlements under your control and some of them are nearly revolting, also you don't have alot of money, add the fact that other factions are constantly at war with you, you can see the difficulty. Unlike Rome Total War where you have the luxury of building up your settlements you are thrown in at the deep end in BI which at first is unsettling and it is best to take things easy at first playing as one of the easier factions. Also, when one of your settlements is under siege and you go to war against the invading army, they don't stand in front of your settlement and allow you to pepper them with arrows, but instead have an annoying habit of standing of from your settlement meaning you have to come out and fight them or try to entice them into range of your archers. This, I guess is more realistic but adds to the difficulty of the game. All in all Barbarian Invasion is a worthy expansion to Rome Total War but much more difficult.
