Itri is most famous for its black olives and for the daring patriot bandit Michele Pezza, born here in humble circumstances in 1771 and better known as Fra Diavolo, for his devilish ability to get out of jams. He was something of a Robin Hood, if you can imagine the subjects of the King of Naples in the role of the honest Saxons and the French as the villains.
