4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty good little guide book, 20 Sep 2007
Have just returned from a 5 day trip in Rome, using this little guide as one of the books used whilst there. It was very helpful, although it's quite tiny it was packed full of useful information, with good pictures, descriptions and advice. Although the maps only focus more on the centre of Rome they were adequate for our needs 4 days out of 5, as good as the map handed to us by our hotel.

4.0 out of 5 stars Truly pocket sized, 7 Feb 2009

See also Rome (Eyewitness Top Ten Travel Guides)

We also bought the DK Top Ten of Rome book and the Berlitz map. The Top Ten book does have more detail and is slightly easier to handle and read. The Berlitz map is easier to fold out and clearer to use. This guide also didn't have anything about Ostia Antica (an ancient Roman town 20 mins by train out of Rome) but that isn't really a city site within Rome. So we did tended to use the Top Ten and Berlitz map more. However.....

This really is a great little book. There is plenty of info in it and it is nicely laid out. The fold out map at the back has everything you need to get you started except for the Metro lines. As there are only two lines and the Metro stations are shown on the map, this isn't much of a problem.

I also like the way the city is segmented into a number of colour coded areas so that you can quickly find the sections in the book. For each section you get a brief overview of the area then a map with the main sites listed. Each of these sites then gets a paragraph of background history plus details of opening times, entrance fees etc. (Of course things do change so these should be seen as a guide). Larger attractions get more space. The Colosseum gets two pages for example.

The back of the book has other useful background information such as common phrases, a guide to local transport, dining out, etc.

While we did tended to use the other books more, this one was still read from cover to cover and would have given us everything we needed. I also really like the way it manages to be so small yet still completely useable. And all this for £3.99.

PS if like us you haven't been to Rome for a while, you might get confused over how to get to the Roman Forum. It seems that this, the Colosseum and the Palentine have been converted into one attraction and so we had to access the area through the main Palentine entrance on the Via di San Gregorio. It is also useful to get your ticket from the Palantine first as these tickets last for two days and mean that later you can skip the Colosseum ticket que.
