4.0 out of 5 stars A cracking read - with reservations, 18 Feb 2008
By R. Carter "Richard Carter" (London) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I agree with the point that some people made in reviews of the first volume, that the "updating" of Rome to the present day was a little disappointing. About the only things that are different are the magnetway trains, (presumably) electric cars and the naming of telephones and television as 'longdictors' and 'longvision' respectively - on the latter, this chimes (maybe she had it in mind?) with the comment that someone made years ago in The Times to the effect that no good would ever come of television with a name that combines both Greek and Latin elements....

However, I can't agree with the mean-spirited, snide tone of some of the comments on Sophia McDougall's writing in the reviews of the first volume of the trilogy. Why be so unpleasant, unless it's just to get enjoyment out kicking the author? There was an occasional clumsiness, but overall the negative comments were misplaced.

So, although there were some infelicities in the pace of the first volume, especially at the beginning, I thought the narrative pace of this second volume was very good - Sophia McDougall has managed to pull off the trick of combining several, parallel narratives to add to the excitement. It's a device (older readers may be familiar with this) that is used in the Biggles books. These were written by Capt. W E Johns, and although he was an awful old fascist (his writing about foreigners rarely got higher than talking about their swarthy complexions), he could write skilfully. And I thought that this book went along at a cracking pace.

I thoroughly enjoyed it, and look forward to the third volume, currently expected in October.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Character Development and a Cracking Pace of Story, 25 Mar 2008
By E. Misra "ElleM" - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Sophia McDougall continues to combine great vision with a highbrow style of writing not always associated with this type of novel. In "Rome Burning" the main characters are tested even further. There is a real sense that they are having to "grow up" even faster than they did in the first book, which is hardly surprising given that Marcus is launched headlong into tense and difficult political problems at home and abroad. Sophia McDougall develops the characters at a modest pace, which is the perfect counterfoil for the fast pace of the action. Readers will feel they have a much better handle on Marcus, Una and Varius in particular. The love interests and entanglements of the main protagonists become even more fascinating in "Rome Burning". Roll on No.3!!

4.0 out of 5 stars good sequel, 1 April 2009
By Simon A. Wright "simonandsuewright" (manchester;england) - See all my reviews

I really enjoyed this book.I felt the characters developed well from the first of the trilogy. The story line was exciting and unpreditable, and there was enough tension left between the main characters to suggest more twists next time. Moreover I felt the author's writing was generally of a high standard.I read the original in hardback but waited for this one to come out in soft back.i suspect i'll buy the third one as soon as it's published.Which way will Marcus turn?
