Product Description

This is the bloody story of Rome s greatest battle!

The Roman Empire is plunged into chaos when Julius Caesar is assassinated and his power is passed on to his 18-year-old nephew Octavius. With his guardian, former gladiator Tyrannus, Octavius is forced into exile to escape those who wish to sever Caesar's bloodline permanently. Under Tyrannus' tutelage, Octavius prepares to face off against the treacherous Marc Antony and fulfill his destiny as the leader of Rome.

Rome Blood and Sand boasts "powerful acting", says the Wall Street Journal, with a hot young cast that includes James Frain (The Tudors, True Blood) (24), Colm Feore (The Borgias, 24), Jonathan Cake (Poirot, Desperate Housewives), Santiago Cabrera (Heroes, Merlin), and Emily Blunt (The Adjustment Bureau, The Devil wears Prada, Salmon Fishing in the Yemen, The Young Victoria).

Filmed entirely in Italy, Rome Blood and Sand tells the thrilling story of a hero's rise amidst the greed, blood, and lust of ancient Rome. Previously released as the acclaimed 2005 series Empire.

Rome Blood and sand was also released under the title Empire

2.0 out of 5 stars Hm....! 11 July 2012
Format:DVD
Well...where do I start? I saw this in HMV and, being addicted to all things Rome orientated, bought it instantly. I guess i should have known better. the "blood and sand" in the title is obviously(now that i realise.!!) and shamelessly, taking advantage of the current interest in the Spartacus series. i didnt realise that it was a rebranded and previously released series. One of the quotes on the cover sites quality acting which makes me wonder exactly how much the reviewer was paid to say so. Some scenes are so bad that it borders on ham, pantomime acting.Admittedly, the awful script doesnt help the actors in that respect.But... what really annoyed me was the pointless liberties taken with history. Just about the only things in this series that match up to actual history are the names of the characters and some of the end results of the situations. I dont mind people taking interesting fictional detours but the ones here are never fruitful. And "Arkham Combat Dungeon"!!!!!!! I can only presume that the writer of this travesty was a Batman fan! All in all, the worst Rome based entertainment I have ever seen and ,unfortunately, not the kind of bad that you can laugh at! For anyone interested in fact or fiction based in ancient Rome I would strongly recommend
Rome series 1 and 2,the two Spartacus series and its prequel. In fact, I recently watched I Claudius, which has dated a little since its release but is still hundreds of times better than this and relates the history as factual as is possible considering the limited writings left to us from those ancient times.

1.0 out of 5 stars Just Awful 29 July 2012
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
This has to be one of the worst 'historical' films ever made. There are no production values to speak of, it is filmed in the current locations, ie ruins whereas the buildings would have been contemporary, the martial equipment is about 100 years too modern (and if you think that this kind of thing is ok, lets all wait for the remake of say Waterloo, this will be the one where the French win due to their superior tanks!). Look at the series Rome for a better, truer account of Octavian, the sets look authentic, the costumers are accurate and the acting is top draw. do not buy this rubbish, shame on the makers and actors.

1.0 out of 5 stars Extremely Angry 9 Jun 2012
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
I bought this assuming it was a new drama series only to find when I loaded up the DVD that it is actually the 2005 series Empire and has just been renamed. It even has Empire on the title screen and the only place Rome Blood and sand is mentioned is is on the box and on the disks. This is extremely frustrating as there was no way to know this without opening the box (and therefore removing the shrink wrapping) to find I have a TV series I've already owned in the past.

As for the series itself it has a good cast but a poor script. It's average at best.

4.0 out of 5 stars not too accurate historically but OK as a fictional piece
this does not seem to be too accurate historically but it was reasonably enjoyable to watch as long as you suspend credibility and any knowledge of the period.
