Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

The songful poignancy of the viola's natural darkness is shown off to the full in this collection of utterly beautiful and remarkably little-known works for viola and piano. Inoue is at her best in the creation of the rapt atmospheres that draw the listener magnetically into the introversion of Schumann's Märchenbilder ("fairy tales"), Bruch's eloquent Romanze and Bridge's Pensiero. Most of us haven't come across Kalliwoda before, but his Nocturnes prove the equal in melodic invention of any of the better-known composers represented here. The pianist Kathron Sturrock provides a sensitive, nicely balanced partnership and the resonant acoustic suits both instruments and music very well. If across the entire disc there is more similarity of tone and emotion than one might anticipate in recital programmes generally, that is more a function of the way in which Romantic composers tended to respond to the viola than any reflection on the performers. Nevertheless, this is a CD that may well leave you wondering where the viola repertory has been all your life. --Jessica Duchen

In my opinion, Yuko Inoue is one of the best viola players in the world. The fantastical playing and the technical accuracy all come together to form a CD to inspire anybody at any time. Lovely playing and I recommend this CD 100%!

The music is beautiful. The playing is fantastic. One of the most sensitive recordings of Romantic music I've heard (without being over sentimental) I would strongly recommend this disc.
