Romantics Anonymous is a film I wasn't expecting much from, but this low-key neurotic love story is a gem of a film which is frequently funny and constantly heart-warming.

Angelique is a master chocolatier whose chocolates are celebrated for their exquisite quality, but her bashful disposition means that she doesn't feel comfortable with recognition or praise, she prefers to give credit to a fictional hermit and simply be known as the delivery girl. After successfully applying for a job at a small and near-bankrupt chocolate company, she attracts the attention of the boss - he being unaware that the girl he has taken a shine to is a chocolate maker extraordinaire.

They both have secrets however and Jean-René too suffers from confidence issues and has regular counselling for his anxiety when talking to women. Much of the comedy comes from them being oblivious to each other's shy apprehension and confusing the actions of the other to be confidence, Angelique sees Jean-René as taking control of the relationship when in fact he is nervously acting on the 'tasks' set by his therapist. A significant portion of the film is farcical and the characters are often over-the-top but they always somehow feel authentic in a way that French film tends to manage better than most. Romantics Anonymous encourages you to suspend belief and buy into a modern fairytale which looks almost other worldly while still being tangibly real. I'm not usually a fan of romantic comedies because the saccharine sweetness can be nauseatingly fake but this only has one scene which could be considered anything close to cheesy - and by the time it occurs, you actually want it to be.

I brought this DVD as I had missed my chance to see it in the cinema and am so glad I did! What a delightful film, beautifully written with the right mix of sadness, romance and comedy. A fairly short film but it kept my attention the whole way through. I love watching French movies and this one is definitely up there with the best.

French romantic comedy at its best. Light, delicious and as satisfying as 73% chocolate of best quality. It simply melts in the mouth. Ideal after dinner. I recommend it.

I expected something soft, a bit pointless, but "nice". This is so much more than that. It's a wonderful french view of life, warts and all, of a passion and its problems. The look is less arty than Amelie Poulain, but the joie de vivre is comparable and sweetly infectious. Just one warning, do NOT be tempted by watching this with any chocolates nearby (unless you're planning to go running the next day). Watch it, laugh and maybe just one chocolate.

Romantics Anonymous is a delightful, uncynical French trifle or bon-bon,whipped up like a new recipe for chocolate, but having very old ingredients.A sweet and witty romance set, appropriately, in a chocolate factory. Isabelle Carre is the shy young Angelique who goes to work for the nervy, struggling Benoit Poelvoorde. They are both cripplingly shy,he has a counsillor who sets him secret tasks to overcome his problems, she attends an Romantics Anonymous group to share her problems. She knows how to make chocolate to a high standard, but packages herself for the sales-woman role.A major outlet wont accept their old product any longer,so Angelique pretends to know a hermit who has a remedy for this disaster. They use his recipe and hey presto, they're winning prizes and selling again.

Two borderline dysfunctionals finding sugary solace together while trying to get the company back on track.Of course the old hermit who is the source of their success together,is really Love, with the softest centre of all.I think they must have watched some Ealing Comedies in the way they created their little world of chocolate.

Great film. Very sweet French comedy about a couple who share a passion for chocolate but suffer from extreme shyness. Strongly recommend.

Managed to catch this in the cinema (alone bar a box of chocolates, don't judge) on Valentine's Day. There is a lot of amazing French cinema that just doesn't make it's way across La Manche. This is a classic example of the type that does make it past the White Cliffs: sentimental and with all the strokes that we lap up (I'm thinking chocolate-Chocolat, painfully shy female leads-Amelie etc). This combines the best of those, but not OTT and contrived. Loved the scroogey boss (played by Benoit Poelvoorde) and Isabelle Carre was sweetly innocent as Angelique. With a couple of surprise musical moments, what's not to love?!
