What is Romanticism? In this Very Short Introduction Michael Ferber answers this by considering who the romantics were and looks at what they had in common -- their ideas, beliefs, commitments, and tastes. He looks at the birth and growth of Romanticism throughout Europe and the Americas, and examines various types of Romantic literature, music, painting, religion, and philosophy.

Focusing on topics, Ferber looks at the 'Sensibility' movement, which preceded Romanticism; the rising prestige of the poet; Romanticism as a religious trend; Romantic philosophy and science; Romantic responses to the French Revolution; and the condition of women. Using examples and quotations he presents a clear insight into this very diverse movement, and offers a definition as well as a discussion of the word 'Romantic' and where it came from.

5.0 out of 5 stars romanticism 17 May 2011
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This little book serves as a fascinating survey of the Romantic movement. It takes in the notion of the poet as divine, the embrace of nature and the flee from industrialiation, the importance of myth and an aesthetic attitude towards religion, the unification of thought and feeling, the love of the orient and the exotic, music as the ultimate art form to which all the others aspire , and a harking back to earlier times. Perhaps there is too much ground to cover in such a wide ranging subject to do it full justice in a study of this size, but it does give a good summary of its major aspects.

4.0 out of 5 stars Really good beginner for Romanticism 25 Jun 2012
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I bought this book because I had an exam on Romanticism and it really helped to give a broad over view of the movement and was easy to read. It felt like it was written in a more casual way but still keeping some formality and was a good book to dip in and out of - you don't have to read it in order to understand it. Overall a good buy.

4.0 out of 5 stars Informative Introduction to Romanticism 14 Nov 2010
By Dr. Bojan Tunguz - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Romanticism refers to the variety of primarily artistic movements that spanned the end of the eighteenth and the first half of the nineteenth century. It is a very broad development, and many have argued if it refers to just a single trend or a variety of different ones that had only in retrospect been conflated by later critics. Nonetheless, a single classification of various works in many artistic mediums as romantic has withstood the test of time. Even so, it can be dauntingly hard to have a single definition of romanticism that can be applied across the board.

This short introduction aims to introduce the reader to some of the most prominent romantic poets, writers, musicians and painters. It emphasizes certain themes that occur in many romantic works or amongst the romantics as a perception of themselves. Nonetheless, there is no single work that encompasses all of these different disparate themes.

The book is aimed at general readership, but it in no ways compromises the solid scholarly work that lays behind it. The reader will get a better sense of the time period and the cultural, philosophical, and historic forces that have shaped the romantic period. There are also numerous excerpt from the romantic poetry, which for the book of this size would need to suffice to give a flavor of this movement. The book contains several illustrations that show some of the more characteristic romantic paintings, but unfortunately due to the fact that all of them are reproduced in black and white in a very small format it is not possible to get a very good idea of the quality of these works.

Overall this is a very readable and informative short introduction to romanticism.
