This is a well made disc of well-fashioned music. Stenhammar enjoys a reputation in Sweden and I have a friend who assures me that if this music had been written by Brahms say before and after his massive D minor piano concerto, the "four Brahms concerti" would be played as a cycle quite as much as the four Rachmaninovs.
Setya Tanyel plays accurately and occasionally (where the scores permit) imaginatively, while Manze is almost effusively enthusiastic with both baton and programme notes. But I must be honest with you and say I haven't been hugely taken with this disc - the production is fine but at its heart I just can't get excited by the idiom of the composer. I hope that's just me.
