Product Description

Review

Wilhelm Stenhammar's two piano concertos are astonishing works, and their neglect outside the composer's native Sweden is shameful. As with much of his output, they derive their complexity and strength from his need to find an individual voice while also staking a claim for a place in the evolving symphonic tradition that includes Beethoven and Brahms.....The preformances, bigger in scope and scale than any we've heard before, are exceptional. --The Guardian

An under-rated gem 22 Oct 2010
Format:Audio CD
I bought this after hearing a movement from one of the piano concertos on the radio. They are absolutely delightful, full of romantic warmth without being shallow or sugary. It really is a shame that they are not better known - they wipe the floor with some much more famous piano concertos - like Grieg and Saint-Saens - in my opinion.

Post-Brahmsian byways 15 Mar 2010
Format:Audio CD
This is a well made disc of well-fashioned music. Stenhammar enjoys a reputation in Sweden and I have a friend who assures me that if this music had been written by Brahms say before and after his massive D minor piano concerto, the "four Brahms concerti" would be played as a cycle quite as much as the four Rachmaninovs.

Setya Tanyel plays accurately and occasionally (where the scores permit) imaginatively, while Manze is almost effusively enthusiastic with both baton and programme notes. But I must be honest with you and say I haven't been hugely taken with this disc - the production is fine but at its heart I just can't get excited by the idiom of the composer. I hope that's just me.

Stenhammar 24 Mar 2010
Format:Audio CD
Having heard a part of one of these concertos I decided to buy numbers 1 & 2.
They are quite good and well performed, but I'm afraid overall they are not my "cup of tea"!
