Like a previous reveiwer (Mr. Reader) I bought this disc for the Paderewski Concerto which I had heard on a few occasions on a certain FM radio station (when they can tear themselves away from film soundtracks!!!) It is utterly beautiful, not only in it's composition but also in it's portrayal here by the magnificent soloist, orchestra and conductor....superb!
But here was the real surprise (to me)....the Moszkovski Concerto is just out of this world....if you like
this genre of piano works it rarely reaches heights such as portrayed on this recording.... it almost makes Rachmaninov appear reserved when it comes to romanticism!
Buy it!!!....if this disc doesn't turn you on, then you have no switches!!

This was the first release in Hyperion's trail-blazing "The Romantic Piano Concerto" series and is a model one in every sense. Two unduly neglected piano concertos, superbly played and recorded, are beautifully presented for reappraisal.
Both the concertos on this disc are of Polish origin and date from the end of the nineteenth century. Beautiful tunes abound, and whilst the music might not be particularly deep, it never fails to please the ear. As might be expected from two composer-pianists, there are ample opportunities for solo pyrotechnics, but there are also moments of extreme beauty: if the Romanza of the Paderewski doesn't melt your heart, nothing will.
Piers Lane's playing is excellent both technically and musically, particularly in the Moszkowski, but in the Paderewski his clean, aristocratic manner is perhaps not quite so suited to the music. For a more idiomatic performance, don't miss Janina Fialkowska's superb rendition on the Naxos label. Hyperion, though, is unmatched when it comes to sound quality and Tony Faulkner, the recording engineer, surely deserves some kind of award for his efforts. The BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra is captured on top form.
The packaging is excellent with an enthusiastic and informative set of booklet notes contributed by Jeremy Nicholas.
I fail to see how anybody could be disappointed by this release, and for lovers of romantic music it must surely be irresistible.

I bought this for the Paderewski which was previously unknown to me. I also bought the Naxos version and played it before this one. My reaction to that was that I had wasted my money. BUT,... this recording really brings the work to life. A beautiful performance, well worth the extra pennies.
