I remember getting this CD, mother in law gave me an unwanted WH.Smith gift token. Had a look at their usual high standard of CD selections[not]. The only think about high was the prices, so I looked in places I normally wouldn't bother. This was a fair few years ago, I found this, Henry Mancini? Didn't he have something to do with Moon River and that Pink Panther. This is the territory of what I would consider old peoples music!
How wrong was I? Looking At the track listing, there was no bleeding Pink Panther, as I knew I didn't want that on, it's not the sort of thing I could play over and over. Kato enough. My wife wasn't happy as she thought I had just wasted the gift token from her mother, though the ma-in-law knew I didn't.
This has to be one of my most played CD's, played at least 4-6 times yearly and never tire of it, it has great emotional music and some lovely played James Galway pieces. Then you have the odd tat or chintz, luckily it is a very long way into the CD. The Sweetheart tree only lasts 1.57, so he can be forgiven, written with Mercer.
I have played it also when we have friends round for drinks[p*ss up]. As background muisc, to help the conversation to flow here there and everywhere. Memories flooding back like old friends, a smell, a taste or a thought and you are there. The haunting music of the shadow Of Your Smile and Days Of Wine and Roses. Excellent.
If you love films, then you will love this. It has Morricone, Barry, Bacharach/David. Music from the great films, played beautifully, at times you are transported to a 60's winebar and expect to bump into a very drunk Jack Lemmon. Another time you are the street in New York looking for Holly Golightly's cat. Then finally in a smoke filled bar, of all the gin joints in the world.............
A lot of these less know tracks for me speak far louder then the classics, Misty for example, I have a very stong feeling for my late father. Why? I don't know and I don't want to look into it too much or I might lose that feeling and emotion. Fine piano playing as well, so you can forgive the comb over Mr Mancini.
For the price you can not go wrong. The music is lovely. Pour yourself a cocktail like they do in the movies, like in one of those films you are going to hear and relax.
