About the Author
Robert O'Byrne is one of Ireland's best-known writers on architecture, fine art and design. A former journalist with The Irish Times, he has written extensively on the country's historic houses and their decoration. Among his previous books are Living in Dublin, a biography of the art dealer and collector Sir Hugh Lane, and a history of the Irish Georgian Society (of which he is a board member).

I liked this book. The photographs are beautiful and the text enlightening. While I admit that my knowledge of Irish history was fairly limited to begin with, I feel that I have expanded my understanding of social and economic change within Ireland over several centuries with Mr. O'Byrne's guidance. I particularly like the later chapters, of the more elegant homes, but it makes a lot of sense to cover the more modest structures in earlier sections, too. Romantic Irish Homes will make a good coffee table book, but one to which I might refer for decorating ideas and furniture resources.

An atmospheric book with beautiful photographs, inspirational, a parable on the difficult art of distressed elegance. Very enjoyable and an insight on the nature of Irishness.

A most engaging and beautifully photographed collection of houses complete with quirky contents and furniture and interesting hints about the owners. I thought it was a sumptuous read and the commentary which always takes a back seat in such books was unusually intelligent. A glossy coffee table production but in the top echelon of the category
