Three underplayed cello concertos by Rodrigo, Delius and Lalo are given here with the kind of committment that makes you wonder why they are hardly ever heard in the concert hall. The special joy is the Delius - a glorious work, one of his best - and it is marvellously performed by Julian Lloyd Webber accompanied by that superb conductor Vernon Handley. The Rodrigo is great fun too. Five stars all round.
Three great recordings of cello concerto gems on one CD performed by the greatest cellist, Julian Lloyd Webber. The Rodrigo Concerto (beautiful, passionate and a little crazy) deserves to be as popular as Rodrigo's famous guitar concerto. If you're looking to expand you CD library beyond the Elgar cello concerto and not too sure what to get then this is definitely for you - you won't be disappointed.
