I used to love LP guides but recently they seem to be less and less reliable. Having just used the Ethiopian (with a lot of out-dated and misleading recommendations) and Laotian (written for monks?) guides, I hoped that the new Romanian guide book will bring some new tourist gems into the spotlight. This was not the case. The book still focuses largely on Transylvania and the North of Moldova (undoubtedly great tourist destinations) but fails to bring anything new, while Romania is quite a big country.
The perfect example is the Tg Jiu section. I am not quite sure who is the person who reviewed it but I am shocked to hear that this is one place in Romania where people are not friendly (or something on those lines). I used to live there and still go at least once a year and I have yet to experience this hostility. Also Brancusi's sculptures in town are "small and insignificant"?? The recommendations for restaurants are "thin" and the best traditional restaurant in town (which has been around for years) is not even mentioned. There's not much about the nearby mountain resorts, the caves, monasteries and the excellent ethnographic museum 10 minutes outside town.
As said, Romania extends beyond Bucharest, Transylvania and the North of Moldova and perhaps the authors should take the time to research and visit the places they mention in the guidebook.
