Product Description

Book Description
Four hard to find, rarely-collected stories by ‘Dick Donovan’ (J E P Muddock), originally printed in Strand between July and November 1892, between the first and second series of Arthur Conan Doyle’s stories of Sherlock Holmes, plus Grant Allen’s tale, The Great Ruby Robbery. Illustrations by Paul Hardy and Sidney Paget. Edited and with an introduction, foreword and appreciations of Hardy and Paget, by Bruce Durie

From the Inside Flap
Before Sherlock Holmes there was…Dick DonovanOriginally created as a Glasgow police detective for the weekly newspapers of Thomson in Dundee, Scotland, Dick Donovan was wildly popular, especially when his exploits were collected in book form from 1888 onwards. And when Strand wanted powerful detective tales to follow on from Conan Doyle’s first run of Sherlock Holmes stories in 1892, they turned to "Dick Donovan" (Joyce Emmerson Preston Muddock).
This volume contains four hard to find and rarely-collected stories by ‘Dick Donovan’ (J E P Muddock), originally printed in Strand between July and November 1892, between the first and second series of Arthur Conan Doyle’s stories of Sherlock Holmes. Also reproduced is Grant Allen’s October 1892 tale, The Great Ruby Robbery plus an appreciation of that worthy man. There are also brief sketches of the artists Paul Hardy, who illustrated the Donovan stories, and Sidney Paget, who drew for Grant Allen’s tale, better known as the illustrator of the Holmes stories.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good book by Bruce Durie for Dick Donovan starters, 22 Jun 2005
By A Customer
An early master of Victorian crime fiction Donovan's Strand stories give great insight to the latter work and many of his imitators in the 20th century. His characters are convincing. Bruce Durie's extras on the background are lively and entertaining.
