On The New Romance, Pretty Girls Make Graves deliver a spiky form of post-punk indie rock intended to confound expectations. Continually breaking any groove they create, they rely on the jerky, piercing, intertwining guitars of Nathan Thelen and J Clark to snake their way into your consciousness. It doesn't really work--too often the music seems directionless and self-consciously arty. Of course, strong melodies might have saved the day, as they have with many of PGMG's north-western predecessors, but it's in this department that the band are most severely lacking, with only "Holy Names", "All Medicated Geniuses" and "A Certain Cemetery" being remotely memorable.

Indeed, the band only really impress with the juddering, piano-heavy pop rock of the closing "A Certain Cemetery", the only time they seem confident and conjure true spiritual power. Until that point you get the feeling that though they all want to be in a band they're not sure which one. The thought that Pretty Girls Make Graves feature an ex-member of Murder City Devils is naturally exciting--MCD were, after all, Seattle's finest export since the grunge revolution. Unfortunately, the member concerned is neither singer Spencer Moody nor keyboardist Leslie Hardy but bassist Derek Fudesco and PGMG are a world away from his illustrious former outfit. --Dominic Wills



CD Description

Second album from Seattle punk rockers follows 2002's 'GoodHealth' and is their first for their new label Matador. Benefitting from a more expensive production without ever sounding "polished", this delivers on the promise of their debut with a set of tunes that are fast, powerful and raw whilst being highly melodic, emotive and intelligent. Includes the single 'This Is Our Emergency'.

Having just read the Amazon.com review, I thought I really had to write this! The New Romance is in fact a brilliant, thrilling album which will have you unable to remove it from your stereo. Right from the first track, 'Something Bigger, Something Brighter', you can tell that this is special. Every song has something new to offer, the stomping 'Chemical, Chemical' to the haunting 'Holy Names' all of them shimmer with complexity and subtle keyboard undercurrents. PGMG have taken the promise of earlier songs like 'Speakers Push The Air' and evolved and developed their sound from sounding great to sounding, well, magical! Andrea Zollo's vocals play off the music to incredible effect, sometimes racing with the beat ('The New Romance'), sometimes smouldering to the bass-line as on 'Blue Lights'
Buy this album, put it in your stereo and leave it on repeat for the rest of your life.

I don't see what there is about this band that can't be liked. The New Romance perfectly mixes ATD-I guitars, a measured rhythm section and vocals that pitch between Gwen Stefani's cool and Karen O's energy. The urgency of the first album is more than matched here. Couple this with a more mature songwriting approach and you've got an indie/rock/(post) punk album of absolute quality. the complex guitar motifs are both beautiful and aggressive at the same time. However this is not just a 6 string free-for-all. The chilled sampler breaks that punctuate this album give way to a thudding keyboard-led treat in the shape of the title track. All this leads to an album that should never be far from the top of any music fan's CD stack. Andrea Zollo deserves to be a superstar, and this album deserves to be cherished.

Why does this album get so many bad reviews?? Okay in the context of good health it doesn't quite match up but it still contains all the things you would expect from a PMG album and more. The production by Paul Epworth (Bloc party et al) really suits an album that not only points to the bands roots but moves things forwards.Stand out tracks are 'this is our emergency', 'the new romance' and 'all medicated genius'.
